Hidden Gems: Meet Rachael Vigil of Las Chicas del Barrio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachael Vigil.

Hi Rachael, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Being a first-generation Salvadorian-American, daughter of immigrants, I always wished I would’ve had mentorship during my transition from high school into college and then into my career field. I can remember many moments of frustration due to not knowing what I wanted to major in, feeling anxious but not being able to explain what I felt, being in toxic friendships and relationships, and ultimately being in a toxic work environment simply because it represented security.

All of these situations inspired me to begin Las Chicas del Barrio. I wanted to be the person who I needed during my teens and 20’s. My passion has always been to serve and now I have the opportunity to serve my own community.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Absolutely not. I had never worked in the nonprofit field so everything was new for me. I searched for mentors specific to nonprofits but unfortunately wasn’t able to find someone who could take me under their wing. I began to read books, do my research and most importantly, put myself out there. I began to share my vision with anyone who would listen and this led to the creation of a strong team. I received negative comments, opinions and remarks along the way but my purpose never shifted.

We’ve been impressed with Las Chicas del Barrio, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Las Chicas del Barrio is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based in OakCliff. Our mission is to empower the next generation of Latinas by providing 1:1 mentorship and the tools and resources to succeed. The goal of Las Chicas is to be what many first-gens wished they had.

Currently, we offer our mentorship program to high school and college-aged Latinas but the program is also open to young women who are not in school. One of the things that sets us apart is that even though we focus on higher education that is not our only goal. We provide a holistic approach by focusing on mental health awareness, health and wellness, financial literacy and community outreach. I am proud of our organization because in a short time we have been able to reach out to our community and begin making an impact.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I believe that the most important quality that is connected to my success is my passion to serve others. This has always driven me and now more than ever. I believe in speaking up for those who have no voice, reaching out to those who feel unseen, and advocating for my community’s human rights.
