Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Herndon.
Hi Stephanie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in North Dallas (younger years near Northwest Highway and middle/high school in Richardson). In high school, I took an Accounting course and actually liked it. That is pretty much when I decided Accounting was going to be my major when I attended college. I realized in college that I am more analytical than creative. Ha!
After graduating college, I have been working in Corporate Accounting for almost 25 years… geesh, just realized how old I am. Before starting my own company (Herndon Accounting & Tax Services), I prepared taxes for a well-known retail tax preparation firm. During these times, I realized that I have a passion for helping people in stressful situations like managing finances and preparing taxes. I have continued to work my full-time corporate position during the weekdays and weeknights/weekends run Herndon Accounting & Tax Services (taxes and bookkeeping).
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
There are always struggles in life. Two major ones for me were fear and work/life balance. For fear, it was the “Should I?” or “Can I?”. I had to get over the fear of putting myself out there because I may fail. But I had to learn, how am I going to succeed if I never even give it a try? For me, that is why I decided to keep my full-time Corporate job and start my own company part-time. It works for me for now. As I continue to grow, I will revisit. I am just glad I did not allow my fear to stop me.
For work/life balance, I just had to sit down and figure it out. I love structure and love to be organized. I am that “create lists” type of person. I use my calendar faithfully and also with all these other helpful tools (automations) and apps now, things are easier than when I first started out. I love to travel and have fun so balance is a must!

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Have I taken any major risks? Uh, yep! I believe starting a business alone can be a risk. Ha! You either received a business loan or you spend your own personal money to start. Starting a successful business is not easy. It takes dedication. You probably work harder/longer hours than a typical 8-5 job because this is yours and you want it to be a success.
You also have to structure your business correctly because of liability risks, making sure you have the correct insurance (bonds, permits, etc). Some people, entrepreneurs, start businesses without realizing how to properly structure it. What happens if the business is sued (I pray it does not happen, but what if?). Research is key!
