Inspiring Conversations with Akeem Shavers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Akeem Shavers.

Hi Akeem, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My story started during my senior year in high school, where I wanted to continue playing football in college. I was recovering from a season-ending injury and only competed in five games my senior year, so I figured my coaches could pull some strings for me. I asked if they could help me get a scholarship to play at the next level and they told me that “it wasn’t their jobs to get me a scholarship”. That one statement led me to take the athletic recruiting process into my own hands and bet on myself.

The trial and error that I faced taking on this process solo helped me develop what I call today, “The Scholarship Offer System” it’s basically a step-by-step guide that takes the readers by the hand and walks them through the athletic recruiting process while avoiding all of the mistakes I made when I started out on my own.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The road definitely was a rough and rocky one. That’s honestly what led me to write my book The Scholarship Offer System, I knew that I wasn’t the only one who needed this information. There were so many obstacles that I faced that you only know about if you’re going through it. Like having the correct make-up of core courses or structuring your highlight film in a way that a college coach wants, just to name a couple.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My vision is to help other high school athletes, who like myself, who are not being heavily recruited. The athletes who still have a tremendous amount of passion for their sport and know that high school isn’t the end of the road for them. I helped my first-person go Division 1 in football in 2012, which had somewhat of a snowball effect. I became the “athletic recruiting” guy while I was actively still competing. I would help other athletes who happen to hear about me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or word of mouth. I would just explain the process that I took and gave them timely advice and one scholarship turned into a lot, shortly after.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was quiet and reserved growing up. I was very calculated as well, I would always try my best to have a plan and see it through. On top of that I was always a good listener and I learned from other people’s mistakes. I had an interest in many things but I always knew that I wanted to own my own business one day and to be my own man. I watched my guardians wake up every day and go to jobs they hated and I made it up in my mind at a young age that I was gonna work for myself one way or another.
