Inspiring Conversations with Alex Hamel of Can Correct

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Hamel.

Hi Alex, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Having been in the sourcing and distribution of bottles and cans for customers across the metroplex for many years, I have experienced first hand the harmful waste that occurs when these items are not recycled properly.

I researched various  recycling centers in the area and realized the inefficiency that these centers experience when processing multiple materials.

I knew there must be a better way and I started collecting stray aluminum cans from the ground in my free time and collecting from clients, friends, and family. I then ensure these cans are recycled in the most efficient way, getting full benefit of the recycled aluminum.

My circle of friends and clients noticed my passion for recycling and my network grew and grew.

That spark has turned into one of the newest non-profit organizations in the metroplex called Can Correct.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Getting others excited about recycling has not been easy. Many think throwing their items in a big multi-material recycle barrel is enough – they’ve done their part.

But this is not true. There is a lot of waste that occurs in those multi-material processing plants.

Once people understand this and realize that there is a better way of collection and recycling, they quickly become supporters of my effort.

Can Correct cuts the waste of these other mass processing plants and ensures that the aluminum donated is recycled most efficiently.

As you know, we’re big fans of Can Correct. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Can Correct is a nonprofit organization that protects aluminum cans from landfills to offset carbon emissions. We specialize in intercepting aluminum cans before they become part of a single-stream recycling operation. Can Correct ensures your aluminum cans are recycled with transparent and verifiable data. We are most proud of our community and their consistent contributions of aluminum cans.

In only 3 months, Can Correct has protected 470 pounds of aluminum cans from landfills, conserving 705 gallons of fuel, offsetting 29,610 miles driven in pursuit of sustainability.

The estimated savings is $1,000 per month in fuel. We project this to double by the end of the year and save over 2 tons of landfill.

Our service is free and we want to make Can Correct the biggest aluminum-can-collecting, carbon-offsetting community in America.

Making aluminum cans from recycled aluminum takes 95% less energy than making cans from virgin ore.

We urge local businesses, schools, and individuals interested in making a difference to contact us and learn how they can contribute to the mission.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I appreciate all of my consistent aluminum can contributors immensely; Nextafter, Paul D, Amy P, Dan S, Kelsey P, Michael R, Jasen C, Katherine H, Jazz B, Sara T, Kim E, Tekashi, Evan H, and Tammy, Anneika, Ashley H, Shayne and Jessica, Josh S, Palle H, Jeff M and Payton, Jeff S, Megan B, Taylor D, Mario R, Pat J, Julia A, and others I didn’t mention, I appreciate you all so much I can’t express with words.
