Inspiring Conversations with Tamasa Hill of Sundra Hill Jewelry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamasa Hill.

Hi Tamasa, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I am from Dallas born and raised. I grew up in a small suburb of Dallas where I’ve spent the majority of my life. There were definitely some struggles that I faced growing up but by the grace of God, I’ve always been an overcomer. Entrepreneurship wasn’t a field that I saw myself going into mainly because I didn’t see a lot of that around me growing up. As I’ve gotten older, through social media, doing my own research and the current resources that are available. I’ve been introduced to entrepreneurship avenues, and I’ve seen so many people start their own businesses and successful businesses at that. I realized that was something I wanted to tap into. I’ve always had a love for jewelry, specifically gold jewelry. I grew up in the ’80s, ’90s era where gold jewelry was a staple and so many of those trends still exist today. My parents wore it and I remember being gifted gold jewelry as a child and just being so excited about it! I would beg my mom to let me wear it to school. In 2020 at the peak of the pandemic I had this bright idea to start my own small jewelry business. I had quite a bit of free time to fully dedicate myself to starting Sundra Hill Jewelry. Sundra Hill is named after my late grandmother. I wanted a piece of my name in the name of my business, so I decided to name it after her. She was beautiful, strong, and resilient and that’s what I hope to bring out in the women who wear my jewelry pieces. It’s always the last bit of confidence that I put on for the day. After I’m done getting ready, I throw on some jewelry and it just heightens my look.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has not been smooth. I’ve experienced some peaks and valleys. I think that just comes with anything in life. I still work a full-time 9 to 5 in health care which currently helps to support my jewelry business. Though I’m invested and fully dedicated to my current career. In a perfect world, I would like to peruse entrepreneurship full-time. I think there is some fear that comes with fully taking a leap of faith and betting on yourself, but I also believe there is freedom as well. To be your own boss and to be your creative self. To have the opportunity to explore things within ourselves that we don’t sometimes even realize we are capable of. Though I’m not fully there yet I hope to be one day. I want to build generational wealth and create multiple streams of income. I think that is really important and I want girls and women of color to see that it is possible. Something that I didn’t see a lot of growing up.

We’ve been impressed with Sundra Hill Jewelry, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Sundra Hill is a small jewelry business. We provide budget-friendly, sustainable jewelry that is water-resistant and made to last. Most of the jewelry we sell is gold, but we also have some silver pieces. I strive to sell products that I absolutely love myself. I would wear and have worn all of the pieces that are available on the website. Our most popular items are the Texas pendant necklaces. I think it’s special thing to wear a piece of home near your heart.

What do you think about happiness?
I believe happiness comes from within. I think it is also about finding your passions in life and pursuing them no matter what obstacles might stand in our way. What makes me happy is when customers enjoy something that is a part of me. I love to get feedback and when they tag Sundra Hill in their post proudly wearing their Sundra Hill Jewelry. I’m always super excited when I get a sale. Even if it’s only one sale for the day it’s a win for me. To see where I started and where I am now is truly a blessing.
