Life and Work with Annabel Luna-Smith and Ana Maria Oliveros

Today we’d like to introduce you to Annabel Luna-Smith and Ana Maria Oliveros.

Annabel and Ana Maria, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Ana Maria, my mom, has always been very creative and artistic; she’s created handmade jewelry before. She arrived in the US two years ago and brought with her multiple handmade necklaces. I, Annabel, started wearing them to work and would get so many compliments. One day, I came home and suggested to mom that we should register a company, buy supplies and start making these one-of-a-kind necklaces. As we were producing pieces, I would wear them to work, and when people complimented me, I would say “my mom makes them, they are one of a kind pieces, and it’s for sale.” More than once, I’ve come home without the necklace.

We began finding opportunities for local art events and festivals. We’ve had Camyda Creations for 18 months now, and we’ve been blessed to have had great response from the public. We love that we can offer a unique necklace, handmade, and very special to our clients. We also make custom necklaces and find great pleasure on seeing people’s reactions when they see the final product. Our necklaces are truly made with love and have a touch of our Venezuelan culture.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road has not been smooth. Camyda Creations’ necklaces are unique pieces and everything is handmade so it takes time and lots of dedication. They are also filled with details which requires a great deal of creativity. Because of all these points, it’s been hard to put a price tag on them. Some other artists appreciate the little piece of art that each necklace is. The general public not so much. It does appeal to people that the pieces are one of a kind, but they might not comprehend all the time it takes to create a necklace. We’ve stayed faithful to try to find a price range that can be affordable to our friends, therefor to most women. At the same time, we don’t want to lose the value these unique pieces have. We recognize that we have to stay consistent so that the public learns to recognize us and return for another piece. My piece of advice would be, fall in love with your product and then make the world do the same. Stay consistent with your passion and then the world will see it too.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Camyda Creations – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Camyda Creations are one of a kind, handmade necklaces. We love that we offer a piece that won’t be duplicated. We believe that our special touch is not on massive production but in making unique pieces that will make our clients feel special. Our necklaces are conversation started pieces; they will catch people’s attention when they are worn and enhance any outfit. The necklaces are filled with details, they are adjustable (lower or higher on the neckline), and they are very light weigh.

We have recognized the importance of providing unique pieces around holidays and celebrations, such us Valentine’s Day, Independence Day, Christmas, etc. We have also created pieces with important causes such us support to the LGBT community and Breast Cancer survivors. We have included other cultures and their relevancies, like Dia de los Muertos and Frida for our Mexican customers. We have created custom orders for little girls with their name’s initial and special request, like a unicorn or Harry Potter houses. All of these holidays and celebrations allow us to create pieces for customers who want to order one before these dates and celebrations happen. Our necklaces are pieces that will be created according not only to client’s taste but also age. That is why we can create pieces for little girls.

What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
Run everything by God. We tend to pray after we’ve made decisions and ask God to bless us, but we often don’t pray before those decisions are made. After that, then truly follow your dreams and what you are passionate about. Once you do for a living what you love, you won’t have to work another single day in your life. Some times that makes all the difference in the world. If what you do brings you joy, you will be able to give joy to others.
