Today we’d like to introduce you to April Byrd.
April, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
First things first, I am from Chicago aka Chi’Town, so of course I am a huge fan of the Chicago Bears. I love having a good time and hanging out with my friends which typically consist of hitting a bar and enjoying conversations that include topics such as sports, education, dreams, and entrepreneurship.
I’ve always had an interest for creating my own journey in life and building relationships. My mother raised three girls and I took an interest to baby dolls and playing with their hair. I taught myself how to braid and occasionally, I would practice other hairstyles on my older sister and younger sister. As history would have it, I would discover my desire to be a hairstylist. I participated in the Cosmetology program offered at Duncanville High School my senior year and would go on to land my first job at Smart Styles Hair Salon. Here I would learn how to effectively run a salon and build my skills for seven years learning hairstyles where I initially lacked the confidence, however, I have been able to learn and grow my clientele with all different ethnicities and start my own company “Chi’Hair” with my business partner Felicia Traylor.
Currently, we’ve been in business for three years in the Arlington area and plan to continue growing the name “Chi’Hair” and brand. I love seeing my clients smile and just feel good about how they look; in today’s society we live in a time where many people are not happy for several reasons and although I can’t change the world that doesn’t mean I can’t contribute to bringing happiness, peace, joy, and beauty to those who have decided to make me their hairstylist on a consistent basis and every day I am thankful for the people I meet plus providing them a wonderful experience brings me great joy.
Has it been a smooth road?

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Chi’Hair – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I love putting smiles on my client’s faces and how I can make their bad day into a great one with the use of my passion for hair. I generally specialize in natural hair, but I have a wide range of skills from relaxing, perming, braids and so much more. I have also received certification from Nouritress which specialized in hair loss. There is no feeling that compares to making a person feel better about themselves because if you look great you feel great. Providing hair services has been a land of opportunity for me to establish and build on so many family bonded relationships. The skill that sets me apart is my ability to pull the visual my clients seeing and turn that into reality. I genuinely care about the client’s vision and the overall healthiness of their hair no matter the nationality or gender.
Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
I believe the barriers of female leadership is self-awareness and understanding where you fit into society upon your own beliefs. For many years women were told who they are, what they shouldn’t do, and where to go. This type of thinking removed self-awareness and left a lot of mothers and daughters searching for validation through areas not fulfilling to their beliefs and soul. I’ve found my passion through providing services that has the ability to touch the soul. A woman’s hair holds weight equivalent to gold in its value that every day depending on your hair it has the power to make or break your happiness. My point is that understanding who you are and accepting that starts internally and displays itself externally. In a world filled with group-think we must learn to think for ourselves and go for what we desire to have in the world.
