Today we’d like to introduce you to Camille Rose.
Camille, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I graduated from Paul Mitchell Cosmetology School four years ago, and then Blade Craft Barber Academy three years ago. Halfway through cosmo school is when I realized I had a passion for the men’s grooming industry and only focused on men’s haircuts, and eventually I was able to use the straight razor. It has been a tough few years due to very low self-esteem. I was working for a bit down in Houston with very talented barbers and thought I could never be as great as them. Now working at Dapper Barber Co. in Plano. I have more confidence than ever. Not only do I love what I do and try to stay up to date on men’s styles, but the relationships I make with my clients are great. Growing up, I was pretty quiet, so it was sort of a surprise to some when I wanted to go to hair school. Now, I’m sure clients wish I didn’t talk so much, but I’m very passionate about being a barber.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Everyone will struggle at some point. There were times when I did give up and cry and cry. I grew up with learning differences so my self-esteem was always low. I didn’t do the best in school because I thought I’d never make it to college. Luckily I learned college isn’t the one and only option. I worked in the food industry for 11 years, I’m even a certified pastry chef. But my passion wasn’t there. At some point, you just have to stop listening to others and listen to your gut. It will feel like a rollercoaster, but now the good things in my life are from trusting myself, self-care, and surrounding myself with positive people to keep me going, as well as supporting them.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Barber – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I specialize in barbering/men’s grooming. A lot of men don’t realize they are able to treat themselves and take care of themselves. I’m proud that this industry has kind of blown up in the past few years and men are taking care of themselves better, and I enjoy being apart of that. Something that I think sets me apart from others is my communication with clients and the relationships I build. I’ve seen other stylists/barbers who are very talented but lack on the conversation. I believe that’s just as important.
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
Talking to people can be intimidating, but don’t be afraid to try to reach out to your favorite IG person for advice. Lately, it seems like so many people want to help others which is great. Working in restaurants definitely got me out of my shell. I’m now able to go grab a glass of wine by myself, talk to random people and hand out my business card. You just have to be open to letting your wall down a little bit.

Great story! And accurate! Being her uncle, I have known Camille (Millie to me and the rest of her family) almost her entire life. She is a unique person and I am so glad to see her pursuing her passion.
