Life and Work with Casey Hasten

Today we’d like to introduce you to Casey Hasten.

Casey, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My name is Casey Hasten and I am your Hiring Guru!

I am also the Director of Recruiting for an amazing company called VIP. Yep, that’s it…VIP. My expertise lies in changing people’s lives, one job at a time. I do this by thoroughly interviewing my clients who have hiring needs and then finding the perfect talent by doing the same with the candidates. My job is to play matchmaker and when I make the perfect match, my day is complete.

I have not always been a recruiter. I began my career in accounting, where I remained for quite a while. It took another great recruiter to help me realize my passion was not in numbers, it was in people. As I made a complete pivot from accounting to sales, I had the support of my long-time companion, Steve Rutherford. It is so important to have people in your life who want to see you have amazing success.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I do not think any of us get through this journey of life without some struggles. For me, my biggest struggle is doing what I love to do and not worrying if other people like it or me. It is important to do what you are passionate about and to be authentic while you do it. One of the best pieces of advice I received from my coach was, “It is none of your business Casey what other people think about you. YOU do YOU.” When I changed to this mindset, my whole attitude changed. I no longer had to worry about pleasing everyone and that was a huge relief.

One other piece of advice I would give is to invest in yourself. Attend those conferences that relate to your area of expertise, continue to improve both personally and professionally, and get a coach. Your growth will accelerate 10x’s with the help of a good coach.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with VIP and CaseyHasten.com – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
In addition to running a full desk (I work both the client and candidate side in recruiting), I am responsible for hiring, training, and mentoring our current sales team. One of the reasons I adore my company is they give me complete freedom to build a better team the way I want to. I have been a little surprised at the number of yes’s I have received to some of my ideas. This year, I have brought in a Laughter Coach, a Sales Improv instructor, and a magician for our Lunch & Learns. Who knows what I will do next year?

But wait, there’s more! Last year, I decided to pursue a personal brand. I was not sure at the time which direction I would go with it, whether I would launch on my own or stay with my current company, but felt I needed to be more individual in the recruiting space. After attending an amazing women’s conference earlier this year called the SmartFem Summit, I was inspired to get busy and launched my personal branding website, CaseyHasten.com one month later. As I said before, I love my company and really wanted to work in partnership with them and they once again made it happen. Although I have my personal brand, everything I do points back to VIP. I am building a brand within a brand.

Due to this partnership, VIP has agreed to another one of my crazy ideas and is sponsoring the We Are VIP Podcast, which I host. I have reached into my network to bring you amazing thought leaders I have met throughout the years (including Tom Ziglar!), highlight companies who are being innovative or disruptive, and bring my team on to give advice to job seekers or clients seeking talent. This has been the highlight of my career!

I am also a huge supporter of Success North Dallas, founded by Bill Wallace, and Community Council, led by CEO Janie Bordner. I believe everything we do is about connections and most of what I do to promote all other areas of my business is network with the right people for the right reasons.

Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
I do! I participated in a very nontraditional sport throughout high school. I raced dirt bikes with the TCCRA and at one point, was 2nd in Texas. My dad was my mechanic and trainer and he pushed me hard to be the very best. He brought out my competitive side, which is still very high today. He also told me if he ever caught me smoking or drinking, he would sell my bikes! I did not want to lose my passion, so he kept me pretty straight during those formative years. I learned endurance, mindset (I would see myself getting the holeshot – or being the first off the line), and most of all how to deal with boys in a competitive environment which I believe translates well to navigating a corporate environment today.
