Life and Work with Christina Finch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Finch.

Christina, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I first became interested in Photography in 2011. I was always told I could never make a career out of Photography, so I tried out other things like Kinesiology. I studied at a local community college where I was gifted a Canon tRebel3 camera. I soon discovered I loved photography and it was the path I had to follow. From that point, everything was self-taught. I watched YouTube videos, took some workshop classes here and there and had a few friends and family model for me. My passion for photography grew stronger.

By 2015, I shot my first wedding, unexpectedly. I just so happened to be in the right place at the right time with my camera. Although it was last minute, I loved the fact that I could capture a memory between two people and their families. I was so nervous to see how my pictures would come out, but once I saw them I knew I could make a career out of this.

Later that year, I started doing family portraits. I was familiar with mostly outside shoots, but I had my first shoot in a studio and it was a complete disaster. I didn’t know how to hook my camera to the studio lights, so you could only imagine how that turned out. I got my first client complaint and I was devastated. I started going through the emotions, thinking this wasn’t for me, maybe I should quit or I just wasn’t cut out. This same client has booked several shoots with me after. She believed in me and wanted me to succeed. At the end of the last shoot I did of her she said, “Don’t give up.” That one sentence has stuck with me throughout this journey and I have not and will not give up on my dream.

Through the years, I have freelanced here and there, but I have really excelled in my skills by working with different photography companies. I am my worst critic, so with the knowledge I gained, I am able to focus on detail, lighting, poses, and shadows. I now freelance full time with hopes of opening up my own studio soon. Photography not only lets me create beautiful portraits, but memories that will last a family a lifetime because a picture can say a thousand words.

This has been quite an amazing journey, but a journey that is far from being over.

Has it been a smooth road?
Absolutely not, there were a few times harder than others but anything you actually want to succeed in life will never be or come easy. So always put 110% behind it! Do the work and push don’t listen to what anyone has to say, there is always someone that will be negative but, don’t give in to it, especially if it makes you happy!
