Today we’d like to introduce you to Gaby Deleon.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started off in the beauty industry right out of high school. I tried the whole college thing and it wasn’t for me, I’ve been into hair for as long as I can remember. In high school, I would always experiment with color on myself and was constantly into change. After completing cosmetology school, I immediately took my exams passed and became licensed. I started to work in a Regis salon inside vista ridge mall, I loved it! It was definitely a huge change from working at target where you clock your hours and actually get paid compared to the beauty industry where you have to constantly hustle and promote yourself.
I had a minor setback a year in my career, I had my first child and took a long break. I got back into my career a couple of months later and started to work at drybar in 2014 and a couple of years later, I came across another stylist who needed an assistant, I jumped into that and haven’t looked back since then. I’ve gained the knowledge I was craving for since the moment I stepped out into my industry. I learned so much more being hands-on and one on one with another stylist. I took me two years since then to continue to learn and be hands-on. Last summer, I finally took the leap and started taking clients and haven’t looked back since. It’s not easy and I take it week by week. I would encourage everyone who is in this industry and discouraged at the moment to take a step back and slow down. Take it week by week and actually learn something new to invest in something new to further your career. Great things take time. It’s definitely not easy out here to gain clientele but appreciates the clients you do have and don’t overthink into situations.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s never easy stepping into something new but it is rewarding when you continue to grow and explore your career. Be patience with yourself, learning takes time, growing takes time.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Blownbygaby – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
As a hairstylist, I feel as if I could do anything but I LOVE to do blondes! Especially clients with naturally dark hair, it is a process and only the strong and patient survive but in the end, it is rewarding to get my clients to their hair inspiration.
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well-positioned for?
Any and everything can be an opportunity for us as women. We just have to get out there and hustle for it!
