Life and Work with Jessica Nickerson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Nickerson.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always loved decorating our home by using what we already owned, moving things around or making it into something new. About three years ago, I decided to start a blog and Instagram account to share my projects with whoever wanted to do the same. My Instagram gained a following and people were inspired by the ways I creatively re-imagined decor and spaces. About a year ago, I launched my e design services. E design allows me to work with anybody, anywhere. The client sends me pictures of their space and tells me the things they want to keep and what they want to go. From there, I send them a design board with shopping links and suggestions that can be implemented in their own time and as their budget allows. I love this because it feels accessible to more people. My favorite part is the pride that can be felt from creating your OWN space. I get to help, but the client gets to implement. About six months ago, I added on-site consultations and design services locally. It’s been really awesome to collaborate and create finished spaces in person.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It certainly takes a lot of work before anyone notices. I had to write and create content for free for over a year before any sort of paid partnerships came along. And then after that, you have to continue plugging away and putting yourself out there to get noticed. One thing I wish I had done earlier is to boldly tell people what I did. Don’t make excuses like, “it’s my side hustle” or “it’s not a big deal.” When I was an art teacher, I told people I was an art teacher. It’s the same exact thing!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with House Homemade – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
On Instagram (which is my biggest platform) I’m known for DIY and budget-friendly ideas. I CAN suggest expensive things if that’s what a client wants but why buy an $800 rug when you can buy a comparable one for under $300? I love to shop higher end sites and figure out ways I can get the same look for less. On Instagram, people will reach out and tell me that I have given them the confidence to try new things in their home. That is seriously the greatest compliment I could receive. Getting to instill confidence and create spaces that make people feel warm and welcome is my dream!

Who have you been inspired by?
My mom is pretty darn awesome. As I journey through wife and motherhood, I see how full of grace and patience she is. (Like, way more than me.)

My aunt cheers me on and points me to Jesus. She encourages me in the legacy I want to leave.

My best friend is crazy generous with her time, talents and stuff. She inspires me to be more thoughtful in that way.
