Life and Work with Joanna Galvan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joanna Galvan.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Joanna. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Wow! Looking back, there’s so much to be grateful for. Every small choice leads me to where I am today. As weird as it may sound, I NEVER would have thought that I’d become a Hairstylist, yet now, I can’t imagine it any other way! Weird, huh? I grew up a tomboy playing tons of sports and if it hadn’t been for my sister, I wouldn’t have had any interest in anything girly. She’s truly who sparked that first interest for me. I always loved being creative but as the years went by my parents encouraged me to take on a profession that they believed would be more “reliable.” I enrolled in a local community college and pursued accounting even though I wasn’t passionate about it. As time went by, I realized I was more interested in things outside of those classroom walls, I obsessed with Beauty influencers, movie sets, fashion shows & all things Glam! When I finally realized that I could create art through makeup & hair, my mind filled with dreams and aspirations. I decided to leave college and start a different Journey at Paul Mitchell The School. Since then, I haven’t looked back! For the next two years, I worked mornings while also attending night school & freelancing on the side. Finally, a couple of months after graduating, I landed an apprenticeship at House Of Hair with the owner Megan, that’s when I truly fell in love with being a hairstylist. I’ve surrounded myself with visionaries and because of that, I’m constantly growing and grateful for where I am today as an artist!

Has it been a smooth road?
I would definitely say that it hasn’t been an easy road at all. But overcoming the hardship and obstacles is what makes you appreciate your successes that much MORE!

A lot of times, our biggest obstacles can be ourselves. That was definitely the case for me. Being in this industry, you place an amount of unspoken pressure on yourself to constantly be better or always thinking of the next move. My struggles mainly revolved around learning to balance the pressures of entrepreneurship while focusing on being the best stylist I could be for my clients. I am a true believer in following your dreams, so my advice to anyone thinking about pursuing a different career or starting their journey is to do just that, START! Nothing worth having will come easy, but the moment you start, you’ll be one step closer than you were yesterday. Have courage and be kind!

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a Hairstylist and I am truly passionate about enhancing woman’s beauty through Hair color. I specialize in Balayage & I pride myself in caring and trying to build a genuine friendship with my guests. I truly believe that when you feel beautiful you exude confidence and that’s the experience I try to give my guests. What sets me apart I believe is the amount of care I put into my work. I really am passionate about empowering woman, so I work hard to make the experience an enjoyable and positive one. I want women to feel comfortable and excited when they sit in my chair!

Which women have inspired you in your life? Why?
There’s an immense list of women that have inspired me throughout my life but, my main inspiration was honestly my mom. She showed me what honest, hard work was from an early age. She taught me to be a strong independent woman and to always pursue my dreams no matter how far fetched they seemed because she knew what it felt like to not have that same opportunity. I’ve watched her overcome so many obstacles and through it all, stay so positive. It’s women like her that inspire me every day to keep pushing to be a better version of myself and encourage others to do the same.
