Life and Work with Karen Dawson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Dawson.

Karen, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always been a creative person. I took a few art classes through high school and college but ultimately was concerned about being able to make a living as an artist, so chose a career in Sports Administration. Even though I enjoyed my job – I felt pulled to do something more creative. So, when I was able to stay home with the kids – I started painting murals in their rooms. Then neighbors started asking me to paint their nurseries and it turned into a business. In addition, my new clients were asking advice on decorating the room and then other rooms in their homes. I went back to school and certified in Interior Design. Now, I get to do what I love every day.

Has it been a smooth road?
My career has definitely taken some twists and turns. It’s not easy to know what you want to do for your whole life at 18 or even 30 years old. I would like young women to know – that it is okay to try a few things along the way but hold onto your dream. You are never too old to reinvent yourself.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Karen Dawson Interiors – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am an interior decorator serving the Frisco, Prosper and Celina area. My services include room design, furniture layout, color selection, and fixture/finish out selections. I specialize in construction consultation in both new build and remodeling.

I am most proud of my remodeling project before and after photos. It is very satisfying to take outdated rooms and transforming them into bright new spaces.

What makes Karen Dawson Interiors unique is the ability to work with a variety of budgets and styles. A lot of my designs will mix high-end statement pieces with economically friendly accents. You don’t have to spend thousands to have a well put together room no matter the client’s style.

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
Thanks to the recent women’s rights movements and increased awareness of equal opportunity and pay, today’s women have more opportunities than ever. Design has historically been a friendly environment for women but now I believe it will be easier to increase the number of women in construction as well. I am looking forward to the opportunity to move into design paired with general contracting.
