Today we’d like to introduce you to Keenya Hodges.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I can remember as far back as being a little girl. I always had this interest in hair. I would take my barbies and baby dolls, cut there hair to try and mimic styles that I would see on television. At 12/13 years old, my mother and sisters began letting me cut and style their hair, and soon, I had begun cutting and styling friends and family’s hair to help my mom pay bills in the house.
It was when I got in high school when my talents would be recognized by one of the best local hairstylists in my city. At 18, he took me under his wing and I started an apprenticeship in his salon. He thought me everything he knew. I think that’s the beauty in apprenticeships he prepared me for the real world. Learning how to handle unhappy clients, and how to work threw and fix your mistakes. Knowing that you can’t truly make everyone happy, but to do your best and give your all every time.
After two years, I became a licensed cosmetologist in the state of Michigan. I went on to spend 20 years building and growing my business in that salon, meeting wonderful people and building life long relationships with some of the most amazing women.
The journey was far from easy. I can remember going into the salon a young 18-year-old lady trying to find her way in such a competitive field, feeling as if I would never make it. But what I learned (and something I tell all young ladies going into this field) is that personality and environment is sometimes more important to clients than skill. Not saying that you don’t need the skill but that if people can relate to you as a person and you give them a peaceful clean and stress free atmosphere they are more likely to continue to come back versus you being an amazing stylist that is rude, double books, rushes on their hair and has drama going on in the salon. It is the individual that stands out and succeeds in this field, your amazing skills are just what gets them in the door.
Now, I have relocated to Fort Worth Texas and starting my journey over again. I have to remind myself every day that this journey will not be easy “as it was not the first time” but with hard work and determination all things are possible. I read once that “it is not easy to remember that our voyage always leads us to where we want to be” and I no this to be true. So today, KH Hair With Care is a small private suite sitting in a boutique in Saginaw, Texas but it will soon be a thriving salon with its own boutique! “With God, all things are possible, I was put hear to accomplish greatness and greatness I shall have.”
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been easy after 20 years of building your brand and starting over in this new era. Everything is done on social media. So having skills in Facebook, Instagram, snap chat… are all things that will put the new age stylist ahead of the game. For younger stylists coming up in the field, I would say to stay true to yourself, let your personality shine. I had a client find me on style seat and she said she chose me strictly off vibes. She could see in my smile that I was a good person. That to me is key! Most of the time, we are therapists to our clients, an escape from there everyday life, somewhere they can let the load off and a listening ear. No one wants to go to a salon let the load of the world off and have to hear about it in the streets. Be your client’s peace, and I can guarantee The will be a loyal returning client.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with KH Hair With Care – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
So, I am a hairstylist, for 21 years, I do color, haircuts, extensions, weaves, up-dues, formal hair, and natural hair. My specialty is healthy hair!!! Back home, I am known for unique hairstyling. You name it, I do it, lol. I am most proud of my many years of service, and being able to make women feel good on the inside and out. I am to many women their therapist, even when I have no idea.
Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
My childhood was very rough. I had to grow up fast. Take care of my siblings, there children, and at times my parents. I had very dark times as a teen that should and could have broken me but I refuse to let any situation or anything define who I am or who I will become. I always tell myself “There no obstacle that I cannot conquer and with God, all things are possible.” I am now 40 and this is just the beginning of where I am going.
