Life and Work with Loryn Hunter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Loryn Hunter.

Loryn, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
LoSteez started after a trip to Fort Lauderdale. I was working OT at Raising Canes to catch that flight. But I did it! After such an inspiring, rejuvenating trip I came back home ready to take my leap of faith. And a leap of faith I took. I didn’t have much knowledge about running a business. At least that’s how I felt. I watched a couple of YouTube videos, read a couple of books and wrote out whatever my ideas or goals were for LoSteez. Shirts! I thought. I’ll do shirts. After doing research on methods and supplies. I bought everything I needed and got to work. Fast forward to now, I’m able to hand paint clothing, screenprint t-shirts, create graphics, photography and many other things. I like to call myself a creativepreneur. If you’d like to keep up with me feel free to check me out on Instagram @LoSteez. And of course LoSteez.com.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As I’ve mentioned, I really was lost as to how to “really start” a business. So where I lacked knowledge I feel set me back. For instance, if I would have known more about marketing back then I could have been more visible now. Where I am now, I’d advise young creatives to listen to themselves. Take that step, that leap, that opportunity. Organize your life. The lessons this journey will throw at you can be very enjoyable if you know, understand and remember your goals.

Please tell us about LoSteez.
LoSteez specializes in hand-painted apparel and accessories. I’d say we’re most known for that and our screen printed t-shirts. I am proud of the growth of LoSteez and the volunteer events I’ve participated in this year. What may set me apart is, I am able to reach a certain level of versatility that many others don’t.

There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
Honestly, when it comes to doing anything pertaining to networking, just do it. Don’t overthink it. Yeah, that may be hard but do it anyway. You need advice, ask! Ask whoever you think may have any knowledge on the topic. Shoot, even the people you think may not know will mess around and have all the answers. Literally, just talk to people. Turns out that’s the easiest and in most cases, the best way to figure things out.
