Life and Work with Marina Girgis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marina Girgis.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Marina. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I moved from Egypt to the US 5 years ago after the Egyptian revolution happened. The move completely changed my views on the world, on what I want to pursue and what my style is. Ever since the move, I have been slowly backpacking around the world.

I was studying visual arts in Egypt and decided to go into Fashion Design when I moved here. I also started getting into makeup to generate income, which ended up opening up so many opportunities for me to connect with amazing photographers and models here in the DFW area. From there, my love for creative direction and putting together shoots has evolved.

I’m currently working towards establishing my unisex sportswear brand; ST MARINO. Basically, the fruit of all my experiences so far.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc, – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Of course, not. But I feel so blessed to be living in a country that allows for bigger opportunities for people, especially young women!

I wouldn’t be where I am if I wasn’t traveling. Travel opens up your creative energy and your mind to try new ways to create and solve problems.

Also, as women, we try to do everything ourselves as we are conditioned to, my advice is to not be afraid to collaborate with other creatives or ask for help and guidance from people who have walked the road before.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with ST MARINO – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My work focuses on the question of beauty. Different cultures have different ideas of what is beautiful. I like to challenge that. I also enjoy bold yet minimal styles.

You will often see the colors red, white and black featured in my work!

I’m proud of the connections I have established through my designs. Just knowing that someone could look at my designs and connect with the story or the aesthetic is amazing!

There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
I’m always looking for mentors!

I try to reach out to people who match my style on Instagram and ask them out for coffee to pick their brains. Usually, people have been open to this. It doesn’t hurt to ask, you will end up making great friendships and learn about the creative process of other people as well.
