Life and Work with Monica Gonzalez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Gonzalez.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It all started when I was forced to move to the US from Monterrey, Mexico due to a sudden rise in the crime. As a young girl from Mexico, I had difficulty fitting in since language and culture were hard to get a hang of at first. However, I always had big dreams and understood from a young age that even when all odds were against me, if I had the right mindset, I could accomplish anything I desired. So, I went on to pursue dance and was luckily awarded a scholarship to attend college at SMU in Dallas. Soon, I realized my real passion lied in entrepreneurship and marketing and dance went on to take the back seat.

In my junior year of college, I partnered with a friend from Mexico City to launch our first two companies, D’LUXE and La Botana. D’LUXE was an event planning business and La Botana a Mexican food truck. After having great success with both companies and learning from beginning to end what it took to start and operate a business, I decided to pursue my passion even further by becoming the managing partner at a digital & event marketing agency in August 2017. During this time, I faced all the challenges one could imagine and even unimaginable ones. I learned how to be a leader, how to hire and fire, how to pitch new business to high executives, how to grow & maintain a client base and how to build a business from zero to eight full-time employees. I won’t sugar-coat it, this year and a half were probably some of the toughest times for me, but also a time where my growth as a young Hispanic businesswoman was exponential.

In January 2019, I took a leap of faith and started my very own creative and digital marketing agency, Blu Creative Agency, and took on the role of CEO. Most of my previous clients and employees decided to follow me into my new venture, which I am extremely grateful for, so I cannot say I started from zero this time around. This year alone, Blu Creative Agency has doubled in revenue but most importantly, we’ve built a team of badass creatives and strategists. I don’t think I’ve ever been this happy and excited about the growth and future of this agency. I’m extremely grateful for everyone who has believed in me because I wouldn’t be here if I did not have the support and constant encouragement of my family, mentors, teachers, clients and my badass team.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I can certainly say it has not been a smooth road. I’ve dealt with limiting beliefs from others thinking I’m too young or unqualified to run a company. I’ve dealt with older male partners putting me down for being a young woman. I’ve had the challenge of keeping myself in legal status as a Mexican/Spanish citizen working in the US. Among many other challenges.

Something I would say to young women is to never believe what others say if it doesn’t align with your goals and dreams. Always remember you are in FULL control of your outcome. Whatever you think you will feel, your feelings will drive your actions, and your actions will determine your results. So, make sure you control your thoughts by connecting to your intuition, be very clear on what your vision is and start showing up as the woman who has already made it… your future self. If you do this, you’ll visualize her into existence sooner than you think.

Please tell us about Blu Creative Agency.
We are a creative and digital marketing agency. We specialize in brand building as well as every component of digital marketing such as PPC, SEO, and social media marketing.

What sets us apart is the understanding we have of both markets, Mexico and the US. With the recent recession Mexico has been going through, we’ve been able to help Mexican brands launch their products and services in the US market. There is a huge opportunity for Hispanic companies to make an impact in the US marketplace. However, these companies need a marketing team that understands their brand roots and integrity, their unique value propositions and how to position/brand them accordingly to thrive in the US marketplace.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
Yes! In the creative and digital marketing realm, you’ve got to constantly be learning to stay relevant. I listen to business building and marketing podcasts such as Marketing School by Neil Patel and Building a StoryBrand by Donald Miller to name a few. I read Wordstream’s and Moz’s blogs religiously as well as Adweek, Ad Age, and other agency digital magazines. And of course, Google & Facebook forums to learn what the latest algorithm changes are.
