Life & Work with Morgan Wright

Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Wright.

Hi Morgan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always had an eye for photography and would take landscape photos on my phone or photos of my friends with their cameras. It was not until I purchased a camera of my own to practice with on a consistent basis that I really began to understand the art behind photography and the beauty behind freezing time with the click of a button. In October of 2019, I decided to save up enough money for my birthday to purchase my own and it was the greatest way to invest in myself. Anyone can snap a photo, but not everyone can tell a story. I have been able to allow my creativity to flow, and although I am still learning, I have been having the time of my life doing the thing that I love the most. I look back at where I started and where I am now and I cannot help but to be proud of myself.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not in the slightest! The most challenging thing for me was finding my niche and comparing myself to other photographers. As a rising photographer, it has been easy to compare myself to those who have been in the game longer than I have. I would get discouraged and would question if photography was really for me. Having people in my circle to encourage me, help me along the way, and provide feedback and constructive criticism to help me grow have really pushed me to be better than I was the day before and to never give up on my dreams. Finding my niche, the type of photography that I really wanted to do, helped me not compare myself as much. I am zoning in on my specialty and perfecting the craft. Instead of comparing myself with others, I have chosen to see their work as an inspiration and motivation to stay on my P’s and Q’s and to strive for continued greatness.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a portrait and lifestyle photographer. Whether these are portraits for a graduation, a birthday, or just some updated photos, I’m the lady for the job! I have recently expanded into doing more events and special occasions. It is my desire for each of my clients to leave a session feeling more confident than they were coming in and embrace who they are, their favorite and least favorite thing about themselves, and I want to provide an environment where they feel safe to freely embrace who they are. It is also my goal to create lasting and lifelong memories for people to look back on and cherish that season or moment.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I believe risks are essential to any sort of growth. Whether it is moving out for the first time, tuning a hobby into a business, or even switching up your daily routine. Whether those risks are big or small, all forms of growth require risks. For me, the biggest risk I have ever taken was turning my passion into a business. From the time I bought my camera until my first gig was about 5 months. Fast forward to the actual day of the shoot I was shaking in my boots from nervousness! Not only was I nervous because I might flop, but this was a college grad session shortly before lockdown happened, so the stress level for these to be perfect was through the roof! I had only practiced with real subjects about twice, and had no portfolio, not a single photo to show that I was even qualified for this gig, yet she booked with me anyways. Thankfully it was a close friend of mine who believed in me and encouraged me, but I still wanted her photos to be perfect. In the end she and everyone else really loved the photos, and I am extremely proud of myself for taking on that challenge. Looking back on it with the insight, knowledge, and skills that I now have I would have done so many things differently, but it is not half bad for my first shoot and I am extremely proud of myself for taking that leap into scary waters.
