Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Glover.
Rachel, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have always loved makeup. I just love being able to make myself and others feel beautiful. I started off at Clinique which was a good experience and I learned a lot about skin care which has benefited me today. Clinique was more about skin care and my passion has always been artistry. This is when I started working for M.A.C. and my passion grew. M.A.C. gave me the skill set to step out of my comfort zone and broaden my range of clients. I appreciated my time with M.A.C. but it eventually became a burden because it wasn’t all about the artistry. There was a lot of pressure to hit sales goals and my passion was making people feel their very best. This is when I decided to start my own company and begin freelancing.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Owning a company goes through ups and downs. There are seasons that are busier than others. I think you just have to find ways when you are in a slow season to expand your business and offer something that other makeup artists don’t. My advice to anyone starting out is to make networking a priority. I started off only doing girls makeup for homecoming and prom. I networked with local photographers, hairstylists, and other makeup artists through social media and this helped me grow my clientele to where I now offer makeup services for weddings, senior pictures, and any other special event.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with RDG Makeup – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
As a makeup artist, I pride myself in having the best customer service and always getting repeat clients. I put the clients first and will go above and beyond to make them feel their best. I am known for being reliable and punctual. What sets me apart is the ability to accept criticism and take it constructively. If someone wants to change the makeup that has already been done on them I don’t get offended; instead, I take the time to give my clients exactly what they want.
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
My advice for networking is to let everyone you come in contact with know what you do. It’s not going to hurt to always be advertising yourself. Also, I believe in giving credit when credit is due. If you are collaborating with someone always shout them out and promote their business so that you get the same in return.
