Life & Work with Samantha Chaney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Chaney.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My very first job was a hair model for the brand Matrix at age 16. I became obsessed with the beauty industry at that point of my life. I immersed myself into makeup and hair and at age 18, began working in a photography studio as an MUA. My passion for the industry led me to work as a freelance MUA for 13 years doing convention shows, working for high-end brands and eventually pushing in me in the direction of branching into the hair side of our industry. Four year later, I have been a licensed cosmetologist and recently began my journey as an independent artist and small business owner.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely a bumpy road. Fresh out of cosmetology school, I worked as a commission stylist. Had no clientele and didn’t understand the benefits of marketing through social media, nor did I have the support I needed as a new stylist from the salon team. Let’s just say I was unsuccessful and had to figure it out fast. I chose to work in an express salon to really focus and learn solid techniques that have truly helped me grow as an artist. That experience humbled me and made me a well-rounded stylist.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a licensed cosmetologist and freelance MUA. I specialize in blonding, color corrections, custom cuts and color. -I am most proud of the many opportunities I have been given by my industry, through mentoring and positions that have led me to grow. – I truly believe the thing that sets me apart as a stylist is my ability to remember the details of my guest’s personal life and make them feel like they’re part of my family.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Absolutely, the thing that has worked best for me in my journey as a small business owner has been Search Engine Optimization and networking with local organizations. I believe the power of guest referrals is key to building a solid clientele.
