Hi Desiree, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My name is Desiree I’m the owner of Dfw Urban Picnics a luxury picnic and events business. I’ve always loved going on picnics with my family growing up, I love spending a Sunday afternoon laying on a blanket in the park watching the clouds go by.
About 2 years ago I noticed a couple in the park having a picnic but with a table and all the works! I was amazed and instantly knew I wanted to know more!
I did some research and didn’t know luxury picnics were a thing. I’ve always had the business mindset and I knew I wanted to start a small business someday just wasn’t sure what I wanted yet until I seen that picnic in the park. I instantly knew I wanted to provide that. I wanted to offer beautiful setups and create an intimate and unique setting for all occasions and most importantly I wanted it to be affordable.
I’m also a medical assistant that is my full-time job, so as I was planning and doing my research for this business I was also working full-time, and being a mom and wife juggling it all was hard but possible! The business went live in April of 2022 we have done over 20 picnics so far and hope to do so much more our social media is slowly growing, and we will be adding backyard glamping to our services very soon as well.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Most definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, like I said before I juggle a full-time job, kids, husband, and Dfw Urban Picnics! It’s hard and frustrating at times I’m always so busy, my family is so supportive though and my kids love helping me set up (sometimes) haha but it is so rewarding being able to provide this service to people, being able to let my creative side out to play, seeing the reactions to proposals, reunions, surprise dates, their faces light up and I love it!
Running a small business is definitely challenging but it is worth it I promise as long as you love what you do, you will be golden!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I provide luxury picnic setups for all occasions big or small, at local parks, lakes, venues, even your own backyard. A luxury picnic consists of a handmade low-setting table, blankets, and cozy pillows, a decorated table setting with glassware, and cutlery, greenery, candles, and cute decor, each session comes with water and a dessert for each guest. We also offer picnic food like charcuterie, brunch, and sandwiches and various add-ons like painting and jumbo jenga, polaroid shots, and floral arches for backdrops to elevate your picnic to another level. Each picnic is unique no picnic is ever the same we like to add little unique touches to each setup, we go above and beyond to make your event just how you want it from rose petals to custom name cards we do it all.
What sets us apart from others? We are affordable! Very affordable compared to other picnic companies.
We offer affordable rates because we want everyone to be able to have a luxury picnic experience.
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Patience is important! Don’t expect overnight success I’m only 6 months in and I’m still nowhere near where I want to be it can be discouraging at times but I’m putting in the work and I know eventually I will get there. Also taking time for yourself! Running a business is not a cakewalk! Self-care is so so important remember to breathe and take a moment from time to time.
