Today we’d like to introduce you to Katy Rushing.
Hi Katy, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I have always been interested in painting and creating. My favorite form of art is to recreate/reimagine things that inspire me. I started building my skill with this while watching Disney movies growing up. I would pause the VHS tape (thankfully later, DVD) and would draw what was on screen. I ended up getting practiced enough with the 101 Dalmatians that it became the way I drew all dogs for quite a while. I later would do charcoal or pencil drawings of scenes or characters that I enjoyed and would take art classes here and there. Once in college, the only time I really had to dedicate to creating was by working at Painting with a Twist, teaching others how to paint. This was a great experience and very much so helped build my confidence as a painter and a person in general. Now I like to create TV show paintings and commission work for others–this provides a creative outlet from my day job! When I’m not doing this, I am making gifts for friends, family, and my kid’s teachers.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest obstacle I’ve had with my journey as an artist is time. It is difficult to allocate time to create for me. While managing my full-time job as a PA and parenting duties, it can be challenging to set aside time to paint. Now, when I actually do set aside time, I may not always be in a creative head space, which in turn makes my art feel more like a job too rather than an outlet to enjoy. All in all, juggling time and scheduling creativity can make the road bumpy at times!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I work full-time as a Physician Assistant in Family Medicine. I work in a family clinic that sees patients daily for acute and chronic diseases. I am able to treat patients in all walks of life and I enjoy having the relationships that I am able to build with them. My favorite part of this job is getting to see patients’ health improve and to have the continuity of care that a family medicine practice can provide. I have a great group of coworkers, Doctors, and other PA that I am privileged to work with, and couldn’t ask for a better work environment! I look forward to treating these patients throughout their lifetime and always enjoy getting to see new patients as well!
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I tended to be pretty reserved. I used to consider myself shy, but with getting older, I realized I was just more quiet, than outspoken. I tended to have a few very close best friends that I still hold onto today, and I always enjoyed that moreso than spending time with large friend groups. I spent most of my free time playing soccer–I found a great community through soccer and had a family through my club and school soccer teams. It was hard to let that go, going into college, but it was worth the sacrifice to focus on school, or I would not be where I am today! I have always been close with my parents and my siblings and I still prefer to spend time with my family over doing much else! We are each other’s greatest support system and I couldn’t imagine life any other way.
