Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendall Castillo.
Hi Kendall, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always grown up with a passion for people. I went to a school with a graduating class of 1500+, which meant I had my specific circle of people as a small fish in a big pond. My mom worked for a non-profit for a majority of my childhood, so I saw firsthand how people can effect change for other people. That’s when I knew I wanted to be the change I wish to see in the world. My entire career I’ve worked for non-profits. Now, I work for The DEC Network as their Senior Manager of Events. We help entrepreneurs start, build and grow their businesses. Additionally, we specifically focus on Women and People of Color Entrepreneurs, which is so near and dear to my heart as a woman and person of color. I love advocating, connecting, and working with this group of people!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road at all! As everyone knows, 2020 put a damper on a lot of people’s plans. As an event planner, I have to plan for something to go wrong. If you “plan” for it, then it’s not as overwhelming when something does go wrong!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am the Senior Manager of Events for The DEC Network, a 501c3 non-profit organization driving innovation and economic impact by helping entrepreneurs start, build and grow their businesses. In this role, I plan and execute all Signature Events for The DEC Network. This includes Women X Tech Summit, The State of Entrepreneurship, Startup Weekend, Dallas Startup Week, The Golf Classic, and more. I love creating spaces for people to belong, to connect, and to be together. I’ve always been a planner, which is why this role is perfect for me. I love seeing my hard work come to fruition and tangibly see it. I’m proud to know that I make a difference in people’s lives by creating places for like-minded people to be.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
My people make me happy. I’m lucky enough to have close family and friends that love me for me.
