Life & Work with Lucy Thornton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucy Thornton.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have been studying and practicing photography since I was a junior in high school. My passion has always been documenting and noticing things that people don’t really see. I see beauty everywhere, and I enjoy taking a beautiful moment and sharing it with the world. My work is family portraiture. I have also been a real estate photographer for the last three years. Lately I’ve been interested in astrophotography! It’s become a real fun hobby!

Two years ago, I set an intention to focus more on traveling and working as a photographer simultaneously. Within the last year, I’ve been fortunate enough to travel to Isla Mujeras, Costa Rica, Utah, Colorado, and Cancun, all while working! I am truly blessed and grateful that I get to do what I love.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I have to say I’ve been extremely lucky on this journey. I love people and I love talking about photography and sharing my work. I’ve been fortunate enough to cultivate great working relationships along the way.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
Over the course of my life, I have had many jobs. From ice cream scooper to bartender to wire operator to NICU unit coordinator to the photographer I am today. My passion has always been photographing people and developing relationships. I love meeting new people, and I love capturing candid moments in children with their siblings and parents. I’ve had my own business doing what I love for ten years now. I wouldn’t change it for the world, it’s just so fun. I’m most proud of my three amazing daughters whom I like to call my muses. They’ve really made me the person and photographer I am today.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
How important it is to be a good listener and that kindness and gratitude will get you pretty far in life.
