Today we’d like to introduce you to Shamika Jones.
Hi Shamika, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Well first, thank you for having me today. My story is not unlike anyone else’s story that struggle with hair loss. My story derived from my two daughters Shanya (12) and Shalyay (4). When my oldest daughter was about 5 or 6years old, she lost approximately 75% of her hair. My family and I of course freaked out, because we didn’t know the cause; especially since her hair was long and healthy and she didn’t have any underlining health conditions. I took her to several doctors and specialists. They performed many tests, referred to other doctors and no one could figure out the cause. The doctors thought she was going through emotional trauma and questioned if she was pulling her hair out or was under emotional distress at home. I even questioned it myself and thought she was cutting it, until I witnessed hair literally fall from her head to the floor. Not knowing the cause was very troubling and it was a trying time indeed. But eventually her hair began to grow back.
In August 2016, my youngest daughter Shalaya was born, she had beautiful thick curly hair. About a year after her birth, Shanya’s hair started to come out again, and to make matters worse Shalaya began experiencing hair loss as well. I was at work when I received the text from Shanya, “OMG, MOM SHALAYA’S HAIR IS DOING THE SAME THING,” with a picture of my baby sitting in her highchair with only two of the three puffballs that were on her head. I was instantly overcome with worryand confusion as to why this was happening and wasn’t able to focus on work. Then came another picture with all three puffballs of Shalaya’s hair gone. I immediately grabbed my things and explained to my boss that I needed to leave right away. At this point, my husband and my entire family wanted to see new doctors and get hair tests for both. NOTHING WAS FOUND AGAIN. We decided to move into a new place and that’s when I gave up on buying products because I just didn’t know what caused the problem. I started from scratch and went back to myroots and began mixing up my own product, as my mom did for my sister and I to grow our hair and to keep it healthy and strong. It wasn’t easy trying to find something that worked, but I finally did! My daughter’s hair grew back full and healthier than before. A few of my loved ones tried the product and were so impressed that they encouraged me to put the it out to help others that suffer from hair loss. Going through that emotional time with my girls gave me purpose and a passion to make the road ahead easier for the next person.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Honestly, no it hasn’t been a smooth road. For me the biggest challenged I face is the confidence factor. Just to get started was extremely scary for me. Partly becauseI’m not a salesperson, nor am I well versed in advertising. But I’ve since learned that the best advertisement is word of mouth, and I seriously learn more every day.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I was raised by my grandmother, who just turned 97, by the way, and she means the world to me. She has taught me the value of treating people right and fairly. That is the compass by which I live my life. I genuinely care about people. Even in my 9 to 5 job, as a Patient Care Advocate,I take great pride in assisting elderly and severely ill patients with getting their specialty medications delivered. I’m just grateful for a good upbringing and work every day to honor my elders.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The health and beauty industry is an extremely lucrative one. But I see this industry switching from being sales driven to more customer centric, meaning companies connecting to customers in a real way. More empathy. You know, the intangible things that truly connect us as humans. My company will be at the forefront of this movement. Our focus is and will always be to help customers regain their confidence and rebuild their self-esteem. I truly believe that the seeds we sow today is the harvest we receive tomorrow and right now we’re just sowing good seeds into good ground. We look forward to the harvest.
