Today we’d like to introduce you to Abigail Taylor.
At the young age of 8, Abigail’s father, one of the biggest influences on her career, taught her how to play guitar. Her drive has led her to travel all over Texas doing what she loves most, playing country music for country music fans. Her dedication and hard work is paying off quickly and her passion for country music can be felt through the lyrics of her songs. In 2016, when Abby was 14 years old, she released her first single “Daddy’s Little Girl” produced by Lyndon Hughes of Stormy Cooper Media. Her first single is a tribute to the dedication and hard work her father instilled in her at such an early age. One year later, she stepped into the studio again at Stormy Cooper Media to record her second single “This Ain’t the First Time,” an upbeat but yet sad love song that was released in November 2017.
Abigail, at her young age, was nominated as Vocalist of the Year, Artist of the Year, and Entertainer of the Year in the young adult category at the Josie Music Awards in Nashville, TN for the past three years. She received the honor of playing on the Red Carpet at the awards show, an honor that few were bestowed. Abigail continued to wow her fans and the music industry. The Texas Country Music Awards held at the Will Rogers Auditorium in October 2018, netted her the Young Adult Artist of the Year. She has been a featured artist in the Texas music magazine “Bridge the Beats” and was described as an “up and comer” to keep an eye on in the country music scene. Abigail was also a featured artist in the Brenham Banner-Press Music Spotlight series in 2018.
In her spare time, you can find Abigail writing songs, picking the guitar and spending time with family and friends. Currently working on recording her third single, the future is bright for this Texas music singer. Her passion and devotion to country music will lead her career and will keep her fans wanting more.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been an easy journey. It’s extremely challenging to be a young female artist, especially in the country music industry. I have struggled in ways that I never imagined— I performed for tough audiences, spent countless hours writing and performing songs from a very young age, and built and established my music and my platform starting from absolutely nothing. It was significantly difficult for me to remind myself as a child that it wasn’t a job I was doing; it was my passion that I was willing to make sacrifices for. Not to mention, I missed out on a number of experiences in school and with my friends because I chose to commit to doing my shows instead. Sometimes it gets to be very grueling and exhausting, but in return, it is sufficiently rewarding. Knowing that I have worked so diligently to create this platform I now have, with a very loyal group of followers, is the biggest blessing I could ever ask for. I have met a large variety of people along the path of my journey, some who have helped me succeed, and others who have torn me down. I am thankful in both cases. I am blessed to have my biggest advocates: my mother, who helps me with my bookings, publicity and management, my father, who taught me how to play guitar, provided me with various vocal and instrumental lessons and helped me set up my equipment for shows, Ellen Nash Massey, and Massey Morris Music, for helping me tremendously with a wide variety of bookings and promotions, my grandparents, Joe and Carol Johnson, who has attended nearly every show since I began performing, Stormy Cooper Media, who recorded and produced my first two singles, “Daddy’s Little Girl” in 2016, as well as “This Ain’t The First Time” in 2017, The Texas Country Music Association, who awarded me Young Artist of the Year in 2018 at the Texas Country Music Awards, and Maudlin Productions. They recently recorded and produced my newest single, “When I Think of You,” in 2020.
Please tell us about your music.
I have been singing and playing guitar from a very young age. I have always been interested in country music, but I tend to favor the old stuff a little more. I am probably best known for the way I play guitar, and for singing old, as well as new, country music. I have always stayed humble, but I am most proud of being awarded Young Artist of The Year at the Texas Country Music Awards, writing all of my songs, the singles I have released, the charity I have raised with my music and of the major work ethic I have gained from being a hardworking musician. I am extremely proud of how hard I have worked and continue to work to reach my goals.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Over the next five to ten years, I see my industry going extremely far. There have been several Texas country artists that have become extremely popular within the last couple of years, and I think that it intends to stay that way. Country music was very different for a while. It wasn’t a country. Now I see that younger people are becoming a part of the country music industry and changing it for the better. I seem to like a lot of the new songs that Texas country artists are putting out there, whereas a few years ago, I was thinking, “Hank Williams would be rolling over in his grave right now if he heard this!”
