Meet Aimee Cross of Ancestry Consulting by Aimee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aimee Cross.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Aimee. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It’s all about family. Treasuring the ones you have around you and learning about and honoring those who came before you. Knowing your heritage, cultural and religious, expands your world view and helps you better understand yourself. Learning your ancestors’ stories and the sacrifices that were made gives you a sense of gratitude.

Studies even show kids have a greater sense of identity and emotional well-being when they know about their ancestors. I was lucky, I was the only granddaughter on both sides of my family. Besides being shamelessly spoiled by my two wonderful grandmothers, I got to learn their stories. They both were interested in genealogy and passed along their knowledge to me. They inspired me to learn more about my Swiss ancestors who came to America with one trunk for their large family, not knowing the language. Or my great-grandfather who left home at a young age to go to sea when the burden to feed his large family grew too great after his father died.

As a result, I started working on my family history over 30 years ago and helping friends along the way. For a little over two years now I’ve been working professionally for people. I absolutely love my job! It’s very rewarding to help others find out more about their own family history.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Ancestry Consulting by Aimee was born out of a desire to help others discover their ancestors. Hiring professional genealogists can be very expensive. Most people pursue that avenue only when they have a very difficult brick wall to overcome. I want to make genealogy help more accessible. As a result, I’m working to break the mold a bit.

Finding ways to become more efficient, thus reducing costs to the client has been a focus and sometimes an obstacle. It’s also been an adventure, since I am approaching things differently than most genealogists, to find ways to reach my market. I’m learning as I go, which is hard, but exhilarating.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Ancestry Consulting by Aimee – what should we know?
Whether it’s helping others learn to do their research themselves or handing them a beautiful color book detailing those that came before, lives are forever touched. With over 30 years of experience researching, attending various conferences, visiting county courthouses and local genealogy libraries, my knowledge base works in your favor.

Initial consultations are always free of charge and we can discuss your goals and desires in learning more about your family. Visually impressive family history books are one of my specialties and they make a wonderful gift.

I offer classes or private instruction for those wanting to dive into the world of genealogy research themselves. I’m happy to do the work for you if research isn’t your thing. I offer some basic research packages at a cost of $250 – $450. Visit my website for more details: www.AncestryConsultingByAimee.com/services.

Some people inherit boxes of materials from a family member and don’t know what to do. I can review those materials and condense them into a digital format that is easily shared with family members.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Genealogy research is detective work at its best. I love the thrill of the hunt. I’m also dealing with sensitive family information, so confidentiality, trust and kindness are extremely important. I love people and their stories, that is probably the most important attribute for my success.
