Today we’d like to introduce you to Alaysha McClinton.
Alaysha, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My passion for fashion and art began at a very young age. I vividly remember getting into trouble by my mom because I created masterpieces on the walls throughout the house. There were also times where I would tie blankets around my body and have my own fashion show around the house, showcasing my blanket gowns to my family. I really knew my passion when I was able to assist my soon to be mentor, Ozella Hailey, with costume design and dancewear at plays for my church.
Shortly after that, I was gifted my first sewing machine. I took beginner sewing classes, making pillowcases, aprons, and sold pillows at one point. I also upcycled my jeans by bleaching them and drawing patterns with sharpies. By the age of thirteen, I had this big ambition to make my sister’s prom dress. It was definitely a challenge, but with the help of my mentor, I was able to pull it off! I loved the feeling of seeing the final product. And that feeling pushed me to pursue a career in fashion.
I received my bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design from the University of North Texas, and I am currently fulfilling my passion for custom design. I’m striving to build a clientele that has the desire to own a one of a kind outfit from my brand Laysha & Co.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road is never smooth. I’m still learning to manage the pressure and the stress that comes along with the fashion industry. Throughout these few years, I learned that not everyone will like the clothes you create and that’s okay. I know that I’m not perfect and will make mistakes along the way. But with all these struggles, it’s important to encourage myself to step out on faith and take risks so I can reach my goals.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Laysha & Co. – what should we know?
Laysha & Co. is a custom design label that caters to all women who desire to find unique, bold, and stylish pieces that make them stand out. We specialize in tailored sportswear which includes, bodycon dresses, sundresses, suits, jumpsuits and rompers that make you feel confident every time you walk into the room. We pride ourselves most in combing art and fashion. What sets us apart is that we want our customers to be a part of the entire design process from beginning to finish. With guidance, this allows the client to express their creativity freely and receive the outfit they’ve dreamt of!
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I believe my faith is the most important quality of my success. I am a Christian and I believe that God put us on this Earth to fulfill our purpose using the gifts and talents that he gave us. I want my life to be a living testimony to inspire others to not be afraid to chase after their dreams. My faith is infinite, and this is just the beginning of my success.
