Meet Alejandra Diaz de Leon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alejandra Diaz de Leon.

Alejandra, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I was younger, in high school, I took a fashion design class in school and growing up in a small town in South Texas, it was one of the first times I realized that fine art could be taken seriously and even be something to do as a whole career! So I decided to go to school for fashion design. I went to UNT for fashion design and in school, I realized the importance of carrying a sketchbook or anything that would allow me to quickly capture an idea because inspiration strikes when you’re just living your life. My biggest inspiration are my friends (they’re amazing), so just hanging out and taking my point and shoot or sketchbook/iPad with me is where most of my recent work comes from.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
A big struggle for me was again coming from a really small, really conservative place and not knowing really anything about art and then kind of throwing myself into a completely different space and starting a degree in something I knew nothing about. I used this new space to become myself as a creative person but it has been a long process and I’m still learning and unlearning.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
At the moment, I’m exploring new mediums; my current medium of choice is photography and I’m enjoying experimenting with different kinds of film and messing around with my camera. I also enjoy drawing/illustrating and playing with the procreate app on my iPad to make gifs. I’m looking to find a way to put all of these little side projects together (and also use my fashion design degree) to have a more solid/cohesive direction in my brand.

What were you like growing up?
As a baby teen, I was very shy and focused a lot on school, sports, and girl scouting, but I didn’t really have any actual friends so I was a loner for the most part. I didn’t really have a sense of belonging and it wasn’t until college that I felt more comfortable to be and express myself and I felt more encouraged to explore new ideas and interests.
