Meet Alex Mauricio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Mauricio.

Alex, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My work history has a pretty wide range. My sales experience started right out of college at CBS Television Stations. I was the National Sales Assistant in the Broadcast Advertising Sales division. I learned quite a bit… especially if you can sell air, you can sell anything. The recession hit, I got laid off and shifted focus to my creative side… music.  After being discovered by a music manager, on the now ghost town that is MySpace.com, I abruptly moved to L.A. There I truly learned how to sell… MYSELF as an artist. Auditioning, whether for a pilot, a modeling gig or in front of Record Label Executives… my goal was to sell my talent. I found a lot of success in L.A. as a songwriter. But it’s no secret, L.A. is an expensive city to live in. To supplement my income, I got into Property Management, mostly as a way to get a discount on rent.

This is where I got my feet wet in the Real Estate industry and started to feel like this could be my calling. Seven years later and again looking for a complete change of scenery, I made my way back to Dallas to live and plan my wedding. Part of that change of scenery meant pursuing growth as a professional. I decided to kick my real estate knowledge into full gear and get my real estate license. It took me five months to finish course work online, juggling work and personal life! But I did it and passed my state and national licensing exams on the first try! I immediately immersed myself into Real Estate.  Having a background as an entertainer in L.A. actually equipped me with a very unique skill set that helped me in my new career endeavor. I was never afraid to promote myself as an artist, therefore I had no shame in promoting myself as a Real Estate Professional! My friends, family and everyone in between rallied to support me to help me work and continue working. Fast forward to now, I am licensed in two states and a career that keeps growing. Luckily, I am in a profession that is naturally interesting to all people. Everyone loves to talk about homes, decor, location, etc…my daily goal is to keep the conversation going and to be a resource to anyone interested in joining the conversation! For me, there are two things that I strive to maintain as a Realtor. One is to continue learning so I can continue to be a competent Real Estate Professional. And two is to remind myself to always be authentically me. Authenticity goes a long way with folks!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My first year had some good moments but also left me wanting more. I first signed on to a brokerage that was owned by a family friend. They promised I would be in good hands and that I would be well taken care of. Like any young agent, I was very ambitious and had high expectations for myself. In my first year, I had over 48 transactions under my belt…most of which were lease transactions. Being new to the industry, I was unaware that the brokerage I held my license with specialized in Property Management and not necessarily big on Residential Sales. Lease transactions are great for learning but unfortunately, compensation for leases are typically not very lucrative. I had business expenses, vehicle expenses and a wedding to pay for and honestly, I got into Real Estate so that I could assist people with buying and selling, so I wanted to do more of that. In hindsight, I am still glad I dedicated my first year to this brokerage because I learned so much and many of those renters eventually turned into home buyers so it worked out. Today, I mentor new agents and one of the first things I tell them is to choose their brokerage wisely. Roughly a slim 15% of new agents make it past their 1st year. What a brokerage offers you as a new agent can determine whether you succeed… or if you fall victim to this statistic! After I changed brokerages, I noticed my business start to change and I got busy very quickly… doing home sales! I attribute that change in my business to the confidence I felt knowing I was now with a company that was invested in the goals I wanted to achieve.

Please tell us about your business.
I am a REALtor, therefore I am my company! True representation is my specialty. My goal with each buyer and/or seller I represent is to help them reach THEIR goals! I strive to give my clients a 5-star experience! Many of my client reviews explain how I go above an beyond for them. I don’t see it that way… I view my performance as “This is how I would want it to be handled if this were my sale or purchase.” I think my relatable nature and my anti-salesman approach really resonate with my clients. I don’t try to pitch them on anything, push them toward anything. I give my opinions when asked and just be REAL with them all the way through and people appreciate that.  Dealing with a person’s most important and valuable asset is not to be taken lightly which is why I dedicate time to taking care of my clients. At the end of the day, I hustle for my clients. I hustle to find them the right home and I hustle to get their home sold!

Recognition, to me is very motivating. Of course, I am proud of the awards and accolades I have received over the years but I am most proud of every time I get a referral from a past client! We are human…there are times when we think we suck at life and question why we are doing what we are doing. But a referral truly is an eye-opener and a reminder that exclaims, “Hey, you’re doing a good job!”  I am so grateful for each and every one of my clients.  They allow me to continue working and continuing to provide for my family.  I am so thankful I found real estate as well.  Real estate has allowed me to not only do what I love but also allowed me to meet some great people and make so many incredible new friends!

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I know this goes against every coaching program out there, but I am not one to plan too far ahead. I go with the flow, I listen to my intuition and I make moves accordingly. These next few years I would love to see my real estate business grow in both Dallas and Tampa Bay. I would love to expand my team in both markets and see how far we can go together. Personally, I want to start a family with my wife, while helping her pursue her professional dreams and just continue growing. We have been investing in real estate so I’m sure we will add to our portfolio over time.

My personality is very spontaneous, new ideas pop into my mind constantly. Wherever the next idea takes me, history shows I always make it work. Life is too short to get stuck on just one vision for the future. I like to keep a space open in that canvas…so I can keep adding to the bigger picture.
