Today we’d like to introduce you to Alisa Popelka.
Alisa, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Five years ago I met a friend at Starbucks to catch up and in our conversation, she told me she was thinking of purchasing an E-Design for her master bedroom. I took one look at what she wanted and said “I can do that for you!” and so I did. At the time I was 7 months pregnant, I wasn’t working, and I had time on my hands. Unbeknown to me a mutual friend saw my designs and approached me about helping with their new build. Long story short, that’s how Alisa Cristine Interiors came about and I got back into the design (it’s what I went to college for back in 1999). I’ve slowly and steadily built my business and have established trusted and long-term (client) relationships often working on multiple projects with the same clients over a period of many years, and much of my work comes from referrals and social media.
Has it been a smooth road?
I’ve learned that having your own interior design company is 80% business and 20% design. I don’t have a business degree so I’ve had to teach myself how to run my own business – everything from admin work to marketing to sales. Every project is a learning opportunity to grow and make a better client experience throughout the design process. Having detailed policies and procedures in place is a must as a business!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
As the Founder and Principal Designer of Alisa Cristine Interiors (a residential design firm) I cater to clients in Dallas and its surrounding suburbs. In my design approach, I believe a house becomes a home when each detail is attended to, and I develop a comprehensive plan suited to each project that results in unique and intentional designs for every client. By offering a variety of design services ranging from full-service design to E-Design, I’ve become known for creating functional and livable spaces while maintaining the principle that the most beautiful homes are the most personal. My focus is my clients first and foremost, and I work to provide a high level of excellence through a tried and true design process.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The interior design industry is definitely changing with the abundance of online availability for consumer purchase. As designers, we have to shift our business models to accommodate these changing variables and not only create new services for the conscious consumer but strive to provide exceptional value to a client through (the client) experience of working with an interior designer.
