Today we’d like to introduce you to Allie Moore.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up down in Austin and ended up moving to Dallas to go to college. I attended Dallas Baptist University, where I studied Christian Studies. I truly had no idea what I wanted to do as a career. All through college and I currently still work with an organization called YoungLife. I knew I loved people, and I had a love for textures found in nature but I had no idea how those two passions could merge together. I had been purchasing grocery store flowers and arranging them to relieve some stress during school. While at DBU, I had a good friend who was getting married, and she approached me a little shocked at how expensive wedding flowers were. She asked me to do her flowers, very redundantly I said, yes. I ended up doing her centerpieces a few months later. That day, I turned to my friend and told her, “I think I have found my passion in life.” I could combine my love of nature, textures and people. One friend led to another, and then, another before I knew it I had done ten weddings. I need a name for the business, but was stuck. A friend yelled from another room, ” I got it, I got it, Flowers and Moore.” Right then and there a small business was born. Here we are, a little over three years after that first wedding and I have had the greatest privilege of working with the sweetest brides. I have been able to dream and execute some beautiful weddings. I have a job that allows me to not only build friendships with my brides, allows me to work with some of the most breathtaking parts of nature, but it has also allowed me to continue to be a Young Life leader and bring some of my girls along for the journey.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. I have had to learn to have thick skin, and that at the end of the day, not everyone is going to love your work. It’s really hard to hear these things after you have poured your heart and soul into something. I have had some pretty incredible friends and family who have supported me when others told me I was crazy and could never be successful.
I had no business background, like NONE. So, this made for a rough first few months. I had to ask for a lot of help and owe my success now to many people. People who answered late night phone calls about sales taxes, people who comforted me when I felt overwhelmed, and brides who took a chance on me in the early days of Flowers and Moore.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Flowers and Moore story. Tell us more about the business.
Flowers and Moore is a full service wedding floral design company. We specialize mostly in weddings, but also do occasional wedding and baby showers. I think what sets us apart is that with Flowers and Moore it goes beyond the flowers, you can expect to have a friendship by the end. I think that is also what I am most proud of, is that to us it’s not all about money, but it’s about feeling loved, heard, and understood through the wedding planning process.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I think luck has played a part, but I also think hard work has played a bigger role. I got lucky with brides at the beginning who were easy to please and work with and I am still lucky to have incredible brides.
