Meet Alyshia & Shekeira Gillis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyshia & Shekeira Gillis.

Hi Alyshia & Shekeira, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
On Mother’s Day shortly after the pandemic started, we were putting together a DIY balloon kit to give to our mom. Alyshia did such a great job on her first try! After that, in celebration of my niece’s birthday, my sister put together her first balloon garland over my niece’s high chair to celebrate her 1st birthday party. While celebrating these special family occasions in a new way, as sisters we birthed and honed new talents, and from that, Balloon Babes Events was born!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, but we’ve learned so much along the way. Like many new businesses, one of our greatest challenges has been startup capital. We have some great ideas, but without proper funding, it takes longer to get these ideas to market. And it’s not just financial capital, human capital has been a struggle as well. We have leaned on our families to assist us with pre-party prep, set up, break downs, deliveries, administration, accounting, and everything in between. Everyone in our family has contributed something, and that’s why we say it’s a family-owned business. And don’t even mention the sisterly fights, lol, but it’s all in love. But when it’s time to work, we put our sister struggles to the side. And when we come together, we help create beautiful events and memories for our clients.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Balloon Babes is a one-stop shop for all your event needs; balloons included. We pride ourselves on capturing every tiny detail to make your event one to remember. Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
As the older sister, I’ve always been pretty quiet and very much reserved. I always kept to myself, did what was asked of me, did my schoolwork, and got good grades. I enjoyed writing and poetry. I’ve always been like the mom, even though I’m the older sister. And, I always wanted to make sure our mom’s birthday was great. So, I would do little things like walk to the dollar store and make inexpensive presents and have small at-home celebrations with dollar store decorations. When my sister was born, I put together most of her birthday parties. I’ve just always loved celebrating birthdays, and that’s probably because our mom and grandparents always made my birthdays so special growing up. Or maybe I was born with it, who knows!

My sister growing up was a lover of dance and the theater arts world. She was involved in all the elements of theatrical world. She loved being involved in things such a as oratorical contest, school groups, and hangout out with friends. Birthdays for her have always been big deal as well because I made them special for everyone in our family. So, I think with a mix of her involvement in the theatrical world and playing with a balloon kit we have created an explosive brand that is on the rise!
