Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Moore.
Alyssa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Hello, I am the founder of The Ascender’s Touch. My story started before I was even born. Truly God-given and driven. I used to be the typical college student trying to find my way in this big world. I originally studied psychology at the University of North Texas due to my love for helping others and connecting with them on a relatable level. Ever since high school, I always saw myself counseling or mentoring younger groups of people. Providing direction in their lives in the way that I wished I had. Generally, we spend most of our lives in school from elementary up until we earn a degree. Society pushes the importance of maximizing one’s education, but fail to tell us about the difficulties we will face trying to support ourselves in the meantime. College may not immediately pay the bills, but it’s truly a job within itself.
I stumbled upon a crossroads of starting to work full time while continuing my studies at the institution. I snagged the opportunity of getting my first position of employment while living in Denton, which was financially satisfying as a college student. Not long after, I took on a total of two jobs to keep the income rolling in. Maintaining multiple positions had moments of difficulty, but it amplified my mindset into the determined, “go-getter” young woman that I am. I came from having no work experience of being a store manager in a short amount of time. Realization hit that whatever you want in life, you can speak it, work towards it, and it will manifest. Nevertheless, there came a point in time where I wasn’t able to balance the workload at a corporation and at the university. I chose to put my education on hold while leaving retail and landing a salary job with a 500 Fortune company. This very job that I was blessed with, was the exact job that millions graduate college to retrieve.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The journey to this current moment was not easy by any means. I was taught many life lessons along the way which are the building blocks that formed my organization. While working at the 500 fortune company, I began to go through a personal spiritual journey. Although I grew up in a Christian home, I was finally discovering what a true relationship in Christ meant. My compassion for others overflowed like never before.
Coworkers of mine took notice that my mind was elsewhere while being at work. I struggled with the fact that I had a car that got me to and from where I needed to be, I was sitting at a desk in complete A/C, shoes on my feet, and clothes on my back. Meanwhile millions of people around the globe are struggling without all of the above, as they wonder where their next meal will come from. Yet there I was, doing absolutely nothing to help.
Every other hour I found myself taking bathroom breaks at work. Crying in the stalls, asking God to make a way for me to be a positive difference in the lives of others. This temporary pain that I endured helped me to discover my true calling and purpose in life. I started doing a solo ministry of gathering care kits for panhandlers, as well as, handing out cards of encouragement to strangers at bus stops. I would drive around to see if anyone was sitting at a bus stop that I could talk to about their life experiences to simply get an understanding of what they go through in their day to day. I’ve always carried an enlightened attitude so talking to people comes naturally to me. As I took out time to do this, the main purpose of it was to let them know that they are not alone. Each card had a message that they are loved by Jesus and anything is possible with Him. I opened my heart to tell them a few of my life lessons, as they did the same in gracious return. To see their faces glow by the end of our conversation will forever be a highlight of my life. Completely priceless. I want to be a blessing unto others as I am blessed myself.
Surely, the time emerged where leaving corporate America in complete faith in God was the best thing for me. Yes, the salary at the corporation was fantastic, but my spirit was unsettled as it yearned to help the less fortunate. In the midst of it all, it birthed The Ascender’s Touch.
We’d love to hear more about your organization.
We, The Ascender’s Touch, are an official nonprofit organization located in the North Dallas area. The name of the organization stems from my childhood nickname “Aliyah” which means “to ascend” in Hebrew. Ascension is to go up, rising onto greater. When you go outside and look towards the stretched sky; we all see the radiant sun, blissful clouds, and graceful birds of God’s free nature. Which is incorporated into our lovely logo. The organization’s name is also defined as “the expression/or act of the glowing hope (provided by the heavens above) to aid those who are in need”. As we excel, our mission is to touch as many lives in the community as we can; while letting others know that we are solely a vessel of the work of our Lord and Savior.
We specialize in providing aid to the local homeless, underprivileged children and single-parent family households. We have hosted clothing and food donation drives for the homeless. We are thrilled about our upcoming quarterly program to provide aid to single parents within the community and our annual toy drive for children.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Ultimately, the organization will continue to provide aid in the DFW while expanding our work overseas. We have sponsored two children from Tanzania over the past five years and one child in Bolivia. It’s extremely special to be able to connect to one that is so far away. Our hearts truly go out to them as we know living in a third world is the exact opposite of life here in America. The children often mention how our sponsorship makes a significant influence on their lives. It provides a way for them to receive a proper education with utensils at hand and ensures that the sponsored family receives fresh meals from day to day. We’re thankful that our sponsorship has helped more than our initial thought and we want to do more for a mass of people in their area.
We plan to provide shoes for poverty-stricken children in the villages, creating water wells, and investing in solar energy for them. Our mantra is: Hope for the best and expect the excellent!
