Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Comer.
Amanda, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always loved hair. I tried, keyword TRIED, my first french braid at seven years old. It was the ugliest braid ever, but I did it! I kept working on refining it from there. When I was in high school, I did updos on my friends for special occasions they were going to. While in college, I was the dorm hairstylist. I cut and sometimes colored my friend’s hair for mainly food. After graduating from college, I always had the idea of going to cosmetology school in the back of my mind so that I could become a hairstylist. I was deterred too many times by people telling me that “hairstylists make no money” and being stupid, I listened. I was scared to quit my full-time job, go back to school, and possibly waste the money and not make it. But, I had a good friend, who knew how miserable I was in the corporate world tell me, “you should be doing for your career what you love to do in your free time.” I don’t know why, but it FINALLY hit home for me. I decided to visit Ogle in Arlington. I was still on the fence, and I wasn’t sure if I could be brave enough to do it.
When I was in the admission’s office, I saw a quote on the wall that said: “Don’t dream your life, live your dream.” And that was it. I decided to quit my full-time job and go to cosmetology school. I worked a part-time job at Mellow Mushroom as a server and bartender during the duration of my stint at cosmetology school. It was one of the most exhausting things I have done, but oh so worth it. My first salon job was a good start but turned out being nothing like I was promised. I loved what I did, but I did not like where I was doing it at. I built up a decent clientele, but I wasn’t really going anywhere or learning more about my profession. I spent a little over two years there, before I had to make a change. I interviewed at four different salons and did a LOT of research before I decided to accept a hairstylist position at Salon Dexterity in south Fort Worth. It has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. I have grown incredibly in the short year and a half that I have been here. I work with the best team I have ever worked with, I have doubled my income in one year, my education on hair, business and marketing have increased phenomenally, and all of the promises that I was given when interviewing have been more than exceeded. I LOVE my career and my clientele. I have such a passion for hair, and for being there for my clients, and I plan to become a six-figure stylist within the next five years. I have been given the most wonderful opportunity here at Salon Dexterity, and I am so blessed.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not. I have struggled several times. The struggle to make myself quit my full-time job and go to cosmetology school. The struggle to go to school 40 hours (sometimes more) per week, plus working after school and on weekends. The struggle of going to a salon that didn’t help me grow. The struggle of having to leave that salon and making sure I made a better choice in salons the next time around.
I have days that I am not sure I am any good at what I do, but ultimately, I have a great team that helps me get over that hump and helps me to realize that I am great at what I do, and I continue to better my skills. I am a single mom to the most beautiful and loving little girl in the world, but it has been an insanely difficult road. I am exhausted and beat down some days, but coming into work helps bring me back up. Loving what I do has given me so much strength for myself and my sweet girl.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I work for Salon Dexterity in south Fort Worth. I am a hairstylist, and I specialize in a few things, but my favorite thing is balayage. I LOVE being able to use my creative and artistic abilities to create a unique look for my clients. I am very proud of the growth our salon has gone through in the past year. We won “Best Hair Salon in Fort Worth” by Fort Worth Magazine last year, and we strive to uphold this achievement. We plan to win again this year. I am also so proud of the team we have here. We all work together so well, and even if we have differences (which we definitely do at times), we work through them. Hmmm… what sets us apart? Our team. Our love and passion for what we do. Our desire to make each and every one of our clients feel good about themselves and guaranteeing our work and our products. Our motivation and drive for our careers. Our constant hunger for continuing education. And, our love and faith in God
