Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Fitzer.
Amanda, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have always had a love for children, it has poured out into everything I do. I am a children’s photographer, mom, wife, volunteer and just recently became a foster mom after receiving our first placement in January. Naturally family photography is where I love to capture the moments between a family dynamic but sometimes it’s just the kids! It could be the fact that I see a child and immediately turn into a silly mess but that’s why parents love me and the shots I am able to capture.
I started my journey into photography in 2012, in fact, my mother in law is the one who suggested it! She owned a photography business at the time in Austin and I thought she was amazing and took to it like a fish to water. I am not a technical person and if you have ever looked at a DSLR you can see why this was a challenge. I took two classes at a local college to figure out just how to work the camera and it was all exploring from there.
My style has changed several time throughout the years but the fact remains I am still in love with moments. You can’t always get them back. My favorite photograph I have on a canvas is a picture I took of my daughter in the backyard of our first house. It means the world to me and I want that feeling for everyone. I now cherish the photos we have had taken together even more.
Today, I have stayed with families. It’s where I find the most joy.
Has it been a smooth road?
I don’t think business is ever a smooth road. I have made many moves in my career life, usually across multiple states. I even took a break for a while after a move because starting a business from scratch isn’t cheap nor is it easy. I now am the proud owner of a dental assisting license I hope I never have to use again and I don’t regret a moment of it.
Word of mouth doesn’t start kicking in until a year in business and it hopefully continues from there. Fostering has brought out another line of obstacles that you can’t see coming. It isn’t easy being a drop in mom for a child but it has been such a blessing and a lesson on management.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Amanda Fitzer Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My business is Amanda Fitzer Photography. I am a children and family portrait photographer and I specialize in relaxed family portraits. I am in love with the way a family interacts and the fact that I have the ability to freeze a moment in time. I am most proud of the fact that, I have started this business multiple times and it always seems to catch up. I am never in a place that I just can’t work. I wouldn’t say I stand out in my work to be honest, there are so many fantastic photographers out there. I would say I stand out in my personality. I am so real and my clients love that. I am also a professional so don’t get me wrong, it’s a delicate balance.
I remember specifically, when I got my first foster placement, I emailed clients letting them know that there was going to be a delay in album delivery and everyone was so supportive and there’s no better feeling in the world than support.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I live in the most unique dining capital of Texas, literally. We have the most amazing selection of food and most of them are mom and pop shops. I can’t get enough of the small town vibes. I dream of owning a studio on the square someday.
Dallas itself offers so much opportunity and growth for anyone. It’s full of small towns, big cities and diversity to boot.
