Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Brown.
Amber, before we jump into specific questions about your practice, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
When I first started graduate school for physical therapy, I already knew I wanted to be a pelvic floor therapist from previous experiences with an employer. Often times women are expected to just accept changes to our bodies as “normal” and we don’t seek help or put things off. I help women heal from “taboo topics,” you know, the things no one wants to discuss, but many experience. I am also a health and finance coach. We often do not realize the connection between finances and our health. One reason I decided to open my own practice was to help make healthcare affordable for clients in a safe-space. My main goal is to educate so we are empowered. Being proactive is less stressful than having to be reactive in health and wealth.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No I wouldn’t say “easy.” I didn’t think I would become an entrepreneur. I was comfortable at a stable job, but when the environment was no longer right for me, I had to branch out. The beginning of my entrepreneurial journey was a little challenging. I didn’t realize just how burned out I was from my previous employment and it was hard for me to maintain energy. I want to say for the first month or so my bed was my best friend. LOL. Often times burnout in the healthcare industry is not discussed. I was maintaining my energy previously on fumes. I only realize that now after experiencing better work-life balance. I’m still helping others while also helping myself and maintaining my self-care. Another challenge I had was putting myself out there to a new market. I’m an introvert, but had to channel my extroverted side. I quickly learned how to pace myself and manage my time all over again to avoid burning out. I have no desire for the hustle style for my life. Entrepreneur, yes, hustle, no.
Please tell us about your practice.
As a doctor of physical therapy I focus on orthopedic conditions, oncology rehab, lymphedema, chronic pain management, Women’s Health, prenatal and postpartum care, bowel and bladder dysfunction, pelvic floor dysfunction for all sexes, and much more. I am also a certified lymphedema therapist and registered yoga teacher. I stress the importance of the community knowing that we are our best advocates and we need to speak out. I teach my clients how to do that and guide them to appropriate resources as a health coach. You do not have to make your journey on your own. We thrive in a tribe. I also help people on the pathway to financial freedom without sacrificing their health as a certified financial coach, remember wellness is cheaper to managed than treating illness. The goal in mind is to educate the community so we can have a better quality of life. We need to learn how to put ourselves first again and leave a lasting legacy. Finally, I guest lecture in physical therapy programs and serve on the board of the National Association of Black Physical Therapists.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I wouldn’t say luck has played a role in my business. Resilience would be my word to use. I have been surrounded by amazing people my entire life, which has helped me recover from setbacks. My biggest life changes included the loss of my dad in 2012 and mom 2017, both unexpectedly. The lessons I learned from them have been ingrained in me and helped me get to where I am today. The relationships they developed over their lifetime created a larger tribe for me to be able to thrive and allowed for bounce-backs and growth in my businesses.
