Meet Angel White

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel White.

Angel, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
The love for music started at a young age of six years old when my dad showed me my first album, Mama’s Gun by Erykah Badu after that it was just a snowball effect. In my head, my dad knew every song in the world and I wanted to know them too. Over the years it continued, I was copying every move in the Micheal Jackson videos to singing every word to Bob Dylan.

As my teen years approached I ended up moving to a small town Cleburne, TX where my surroundings had changed a bit. Very country and not a lot of people who looked liked me but I embraced every part of it which led me to new discoveries both within myself and music. The Killers and Third Eye Blind were my favorite bands in this time as well as Kid Cudi, he’s like my musical savior.

At the end of my senior year, some of my friends were making music and I decided I wanted to join in on the fun so I started rapping and that’s when the journey began as far as actually making music, it was like the love I already had transferred seamlessly over to creating it. I rapped for about a year or so and it was fun but I wanted more, something deeper.

Soon after making the decision to stop rapping I started to sing a lot more and put together a band with some friends called Three Trees. It didn’t really last that long but it definitely taught me a lot about the process. Fast forward about eight months the band took a turn and members were worried about other things, that’s when I made the choice to go solo. I immediately bought a guitar and started teaching myself, I picked up the fundamentals pretty quick and was able to start composing my own sound.

Writing songs didn’t really require too much thought for me, it was all very intuitive. A year went by and I was building a selection of music. I hadn’t released anything yet but was presented an opportunity to go on a 25 city tour across the U.S. with a good friend by name of Mod Sun. So, in the midst of excitement, I was compelled to finish a project and released my first EP “A Cry For Help (Acoustic Session)” a day before the tour started. The tour was a highlight in my life with the entire experience of traveling and playing in these cities for the first time.

Coming back home when it was over was nice after a month on the road, grounding, to say the least. Since then it has just been a matter of bettering my craft and expanding as a person. Aside from my musical experience, there’s a ton of influence outside of it. I work on a local bee farm and raise horses so the open land and space are my sanctuaries, I do a lot of writing out there. I don’t know where I’ll end up but I know where I am is a lovely place.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Struggles began when people I was surrounded with weren’t as invested as I was with it, forcing me to do it on my own which just showed me to trust myself more.

At times I was discouraged and was more focused on the feedback rather than the product I was making.

My own ego and making certain goals that I wasn’t putting enough work in to obtain and beating myself up for it.

The plateau you think you hit.

Trying to figure out the best way to do things and being my biggest critic.

Tell us more about your work.
I am more than just a musician/singer, I believe I am an experience that can help. It helped me and I know I’m not alone in the things that I feel. The rawness and the message of what I do is what people take away from seeing me. Overall just being a light in the world as much as I can.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My parents have supported me in this from the start which I think most kids need when it comes to following dreams.

My Grandmother is very dear to me.

Then comes my big brother and little sister.

My friends, I surround myself with all very talented and inspiring.

Every artist I admire I take something from and apply to my way of doing things.

Most importantly the people who are listening, the ones who relate to the things I’m doing and saying. They’re the reason I able to do a lot of this stuff.
