Meet Angela Hines

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Hines.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am originally from Birmingham; AL and my artistic journey began my sophomore year of high school. I had an art teacher who was passionate about her craft and really inspired me to pursue a career in the arts. Upon graduating high school, I enrolled in a local university to pursue my bachelors of fine arts degree in graphic design. While in college I learned a lot about design presentation and branding. The program also included many traditional fine art courses, such as drawing and painting. My love for these traditional practices eventually began to inspire my graphic design projects. I tried to include hand-drawn illustrations in all of my design work.

After graduating from college in 2013, I landed my first job as a graphic designer for a start-up company designing promotional materials and t-shirt graphics. I enjoyed the design projects, but I began to miss creating artwork that was personal and emotional. I made many attempts to create art after work but lacked the energy to do so while working for this company. This situation of working without purpose placed me in a constant state of anxiety and caused me to question my career in the arts. After 2 years, I decided to relocate to Dallas, TX for a fresh start.

The new location turned out to be just what I needed. I was much more motivated to create and I slowly began getting involved in the art scene by submitting work to local shows and taking on freelance projects.

Today I am a full-time artist doing business under the name AngelaO Art.

Please tell us about your art.
I create art that is inspirational and motivational using colored pencil as my primary medium. My work is inspired by my life experiences. Whenever I need a little motivation or affirmation, I create artwork that will encourage me to keep moving forward.

My hope is that people receive a sense of clarity after viewing my work. I want to open people’s eyes to what really matters in life- internal peace and happiness. My goal is to show others that we are already equipped with the tools to succeed- it simply takes a change in perspective.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
The biggest challenge facing artists today is a lack of faith in their craft. A large number of artists do not believe it is possible to make a living doing what they love. That doubt prevents many people from even trying. I think once artists begin to view themselves as entrepreneurs, the notion that being an artist is an “unrealistic” career choice will be a thing of the past.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Giclee’ prints of my artwork as well as original pieces can be purchased online at angelaoart.etsy.com and on my website outseycreates.com/my portfolio.
