Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Tate.
Angela, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was always a huge fan of the Play Street Museum. I went from teaching to being a SAHM when I became a mother. I would bring my kids as often as I could. We would have the best time, and I loved watching them explore and learn through play at each visit. We decided to host my daughter’s birthday party at Play Street and while at the party, the attendant let us know that PSM was starting to franchise. I remember feeling so excited but also thinking… I could never do that!
However, I couldn’t get the thought out of my head. I kept thinking of how much I loved PSM and how exciting and wonderful it would be to have my own location. I decided to look into it, and the rest is history! Somehow “looking into it” turned into me being the proud owner of PSM Frisco! I usually laugh when I tell the story because, throughout the whole process, I had myself convinced it wasn’t happening… even after every successful next step. I love working with families and children so this has been a real joy to me. I never thought I would be an entrepreneur and own my own business, but sometimes God leads us in new directions.
Has it been a smooth road?
I have come to learn there are few things in life I would categorize as a “smooth” road (at least not the roads that really matter). There is no way that buying, owning, and running your own business can come without struggles or growing pains. I think for me, the biggest struggle was going from being a stay at home mom and homemaker to a businesswoman who was out of the house or often working times seven days a week. There’s a lot of pressure we put on ourselves as wives and mothers and balancing that with the new pressure of being a business owner was in the simplest terms – A LOT. I also come from a background of Special Education (not business) so the learning and growth that took place, in the beginning, would feel overwhelming. Owning a small business is probably one of the most difficult things I have ever done. In the same breath, I could also say it has been one of the most rewarding. I am grateful to have been given this opportunity and even more grateful that I have an amazingly patient and supportive husband.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Play Street Museum Frisco – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are a small format children’s museum and my location is called Town Square. We are open Monday-Friday (9-5) for Open Play, and weekends are reserved for private parties or special events. We offer a safe and imaginative kids indoor play area for the simple reason that it is fun for children. Also, we love science and data. The evidence supporting the significant developmental benefits of open and pretend play for young children continues to be added to by comprehensive research in the field of child development and educational psychology. Our mission is for your kiddos to Discover, Imagine, and Explore! We have been voted one of the best venues to host an indoor party multiple times, and US News has named us one of the ten best museums to visit in the Dallas area.
In addition to Open Play, we also offer paint your own pottery. You can do this in the store or take it to go. I am also home to Lizzy – our one and an only bearded dragon. She lives in the Pet Shop of Town Square and she is queen bee for sure. The kids and adults alike all adore her!
My prayer is that my love of families and children really helps to set us apart. I want each person who walks in to feel welcome and know that we have put a lot of thought into each area of our museum. It’s my passion that the kids who come have FUN. I care about all of my customers and I am so grateful for their support.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I have always enjoyed Dallas and the surrounding cities. My favorite thing about living in this area is that there is no shortage of things to do! Even better than that is how close and accessible it all is. You do not have to go far to find a restaurant, store, attraction, museum, movie, park, etc. I like to think of myself as a foodie so being in the heart of so many delicious food options is heaven! I often joke that I should have been a food critic. I cannot think of anything better than people dying to feed me all of their greatest creations.
My husband Kenneth and I have two children: Ella eight years and Logan five years. We love having them in a community that still feels small and close-knit, while also having a big city feel. It’s like the best of both worlds. If I had a complaint, it would be that this is not the beach. Unfortunately for me, Frisco is not a tropical island. 🙂
