Today we’d like to introduce you to Anita Sanchez.
Anita, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Hecho Con Amor, which translates to Made With Love, began in August of 2018. I wanted to find a way to make vendor events that were accessible and affordable for the artists and vendors who, like myself, needed it the most. I found that many events I wanted and often times needed to participate in as a means to support myself through selling my craft, were simply too pricey. I wanted for other locals to have the ability to network and find support in one another as artists and neighbors. While we do have a mixed rotation of different vendors, there is a really solid and inclusive group of regulars who have formed into a little art family. Often times, the events have a feeling of a family get together. Everyone is always very supportive and encouraging of one another. I think this is something that makes Hecho Con Amor stand out. It is a small event but it has a huge heart presence. A good amount of our business comes from word of mouth. Our vendors are eclectic and range from visual artists, handmade jewelry designers, candles, baked goods, preserves, tarot readers, energy workers, fashion designers, musicians, and the list goes on. The biggest focus is on locally made, small businesses with the majority of them being POC owned and operated.
Has it been a smooth road?
Our events are always set up indoor and outdoor, so I think the biggest obstacle I have encountered in hosting the Hecho Con Amor events is actually the weather! We have had events where the vendors literally had to tape everything down or it would continuously get knocked over. Some days, we are expecting pleasant, easy weather but then, the clouds will open up. We have had to reschedule due to being rained out once before.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Hecho Con Amor – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Hecho Con Amor, which translates to ‘Made With Love’ is an Oak Cliff-based entity that curates and promotes reoccurring pop-up vendor markets and events. The majority of these events spotlight and focus on small and local businesses, artists, artisans, and merchants. Hecho Con Amor offers a platform for small and local vendors to showcase their work, nourish the lines of communication with the community and also to strengthen financial stability through selling their goods while networking with other vendors. Currently, our events are held at the longtime Oak Cliff neighborhood staple, Maroches Bakery off W. Davis St. Maroches is as well known for its authentic Mexican sweet bread as it is for consistently opening its doors to the public for cultural programs and small business events like the ones created by Hecho Con Amor.
I am most proud of the way we consistently come together and help each other out. Whether it’ll be setting up, cheering each other on, supporting each other’s businesses by purchasing, and most importantly, forming real connections and friendships with one another. We have a real feeling of family, and I think that really sets us apart.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the diversity. I love art and artists. There are so many local artists who wear so many hats, supporting the community, being verbal against injustices, promoting wellness and health, encouraging others. I love that we have an art scene here in Dallas that really shows up for its people. There are so many art shows and events that are donation based and give proceeds to help others in the community and beyond.
What I like least about the city, definitely THE POTHOLES! Hahaha! Especially in Oak Cliff!
