Today we’d like to introduce you to Apryl Witherspoon.
Apryl, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Where shall I start? I feel I have taken the long road to success, but I do not regret one bit of it. I was raised in Kaufman, TX, which is a small town about 30 minutes east of Dallas. I was raised by my grandparents and eventually began to care for them at a young age. I was driving my grandmother around at the age of 12, I got my first job and started working at 16, all while taking honors’ classes in grade school. I was no stranger to hard work. I always accepted a challenge to be successful and definitely wanted more out of life. My grandfather developed Alzheimer’s disease, and after watching his behaviors over the years, I became intrigued by how the mind works and the medical field in general.
After graduating from high school, I left to attend the University of North Texas and graduated with a degree in Psychology. Here is where I became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, and learned the value of constructive development and serving others. After working in the mental health field for a few years, I just felt unsatisfied and unfulfilled. I had a talk with my mother and she suggested I look into nursing school. This was one of the best decisions I have ever made. After becoming a Registered Nurse, I worked in the Intensive Care Unit for five years. Taking care of critically ill patients was definitely rewarding but still unfulfilling and I knew I wanted more. This is when I decided to go back to school again to become a Family Nurse Practitioner. After graduation, I landed my first job in an Urgent Care/Family Practice setting working alongside a Physician that introduced me to the wonderful world of Botox.
It was then, in 2016, when my journey into Aesthetic Medicine began. It was amazing to see how injectables and quality skincare could truly help turn back the hands of time for patients. I could personally relate to patients regarding feeling insecure about cosmetic features. In grade school, I would get teased for having large facial features, and for years I allowed it to be an insecurity of mine. I wanted my career to be rewarding, fulfilling and ultimately have an impact on making people feel good about themselves. Most patients seek medical attention when they are not feeling well, and typically dread going in for their annual routine checkup. I enjoy working with healthy patients that are excited to come in for advice on improving self-care goals and feeling great from the inside out. This is when I knew I was destined to continue my career in medical aesthetics.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The entire process of breaking into this industry has indeed been a challenge. I have dedicated my time and finances on conferences, individual training, courses, etc. to acquire skills and knowledge in the field of medical aesthetics. This is necessary in order to stay ahead of the curve. The industry is always evolving to give patients the most advanced treatments on the market. After relocating to California for my husband’s job, I worked in a couple of different well-known Medical Spas in the Los Angeles area. During this time, I had the privilege of learning and working alongside some of the industry’s top injectors. I was fortunate to have gained this experience, and then continue doing what I love after relocating back to Dallas a couple of years later. After patience, planning and A LOT of prayer, I was finally ready to step out on Faith to make my dreams a reality. This is when NWME Aesthetics was born.
Being an employee vs. being a business owner presents totally different roles. As an entrepreneur, you have to wear many hats and always be flexible. With the help of a former colleague, I was able to get started doing what I love independently. There have been many sleepless nights, early mornings, conference calls, many things that do go wrong, you name it… but the experience is invaluable, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
NWME Aesthetics – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
At NWME Aesthetics, we want to help you fall in love with yourself through our personalized and intimate aesthetic experience for ALL SKIN TYPES. Educating our patients is not something we take lightly. We pride ourselves on building a relationship with each individual patient throughout their skincare journey through excellent customer service and quality care each visit. We provide facial rejuvenation, skin & hair restoration using quality, medical-grade products. Patients are assessed by skilled and experienced Board Certified Experts because we are all beautiful in our own way.
I am proud to be able to give individualized treatment plans for my patients and not overbook appointment times. After all, their time is just as valuable. I certainly understand the business perspective, but I have built a model that gives patients my undivided attention, where they have plenty of time to discuss all their needs and get their procedure the same day if desired. I do not believe in an aggressive sales approach. If you could benefit from a procedure or product, I will advise you of this, but if it is not recommended, I will definitely be upfront and honest about that as well.
What sets me apart, is being a Black Female in this industry and strongly valuing natural beauty enhancements. I want to be known for having my patients’ best interest in heart and mind, rather than treating them like just a transaction. Not to mention we are available late hours and weekends. I feel that I am able to connect with all walks of life and truly understand various skincare procedures from many cultural perspectives. My goal is to establish a rapport with all of my patients and build a partnership along their journey to a natural, enhanced version of themselves.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I am most proud when I am able to share my excitement and joy of medical aesthetics with others. I have conducted training with other licensed medical professionals, such as Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants and RNs in both formal and informal settings. I am always eager to provide helpful advice or suggestions in order to pay it forward because I know first hand how much of a struggle it is to get a start in this industry. Also, when I have been able to connect with a patient, earn their trust, make them feel more empowered with education, and get amazing results, this definitely defines success in my eyes. The rest will continue to fall into place.
