Today we’d like to introduce you to Arnita Johnson-Hall.
Arnita, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was working a dead end job and was on government assistance. I faced many financial hardships and money woes, especially being a single parent. Hard times hit and therefore, my credit and finances suffered drastically because of it. In 2007, I ended up landing another dead-end job and soon realized that I had to make the best out of what I had, I learned that it wasn’t too much about how much money I made, it was more so about how to manage it.
I was working for a car dealership and it was there where I realized how important having good credit was. If you had good credit, the red carpet was rolled out for you. You were treated with respect and the best interest rates were offered. It was pretty much a sign and drive. If you had bad credit, “Oh my!”, there was no red carpet, you’d have to sit in finance for what seemed like forever because the finance department was trying to see who could pick up your loan, either a large down payment or co-signed was required. Most of the times, if you had bad credit… chances were that you were walking out with a vehicle that you’d be paying on for seven years with a high-interest rate or you’d be leaving in an Uber.
So, it sparked my interest to know more about credit and I decided to repair my own. I used to believe that the information on my credit report was accurate simply because it was there. That is so untrue. By law, the credit bureaus must ensure that information displayed on your credit report is 100% accurate and although this is the law and their job… the credit bureaus have failed when it comes making sure our credit reports are correct.
After pulling my credit report, I noticed a ton of inaccuracies. I studied the credit consumer laws and was able to increase my credit score from a 303 to a 645 in six months. I just knew that the information I learned, most people didn’t know so I made it my mission to spread credit awareness on the importance of having good credit.
I started my company AMB Credit Consultants, a credit consulting agency here in Dallas, TX in 2007 to assist consumers with correcting inaccuracies on their credit reports, educate them on credit and money management, and help them reach their credit goals. I created Luxurious Credit, a credit and financial literacy blog back in 2012.
I have been able to build a multi-million dollar brand in this industry by following my passion and assist others.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road to starting my own business and being an entrepreneur was not easy. I started my business with just $200 but it taught me true business strategy. I learned how to build from the ground up and not be afraid to go after it. I had to learn and figure it out as I went.
I also had to deal with people not understanding my business dreams and visions. When I said I wanted to start my own business, I didn’t get much support. It wasn’t until my business started to grow when people started to believe in me. That was tough to deal with at one point.
All of the things I learned while growing my business has contributed to the successful business owner I am today. It has truly taught me the ins and outs of the business.
