Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Burr.
Ashley, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always had the desire to serve and help people. I graduated nursing school and worked as an operating room nurse for nine years. During that time, I went on a few short-term trips serving women of west Africa through surgical procedures with several organizations. When I came back from my last trip, I met my husband through a blind date. We got married and we had our first baby two years later. I stopped working as a nurse when our daughter was born but deep down, I think I still desired to help women in some way. I did not know what it would be like to be a mom until I had kids myself. Between my second and third child, I started a spray tanning business called Healthy Glow. I loved the way spray tans made me feel confident and beautiful. It was a great way to have a beautiful tan without the harmful rays of the sun.
As a mom, I realized it can be hard to make time for myself, especially appointments when it comes to hair or nails. I wanted to be able to offer flexible appointments for moms who needed it after the kids go to sleep or when they are at school. In spring of 2019, I was looking for ways to spread the word about Healthy Glow. I wanted to have an event for moms where they could get some of those beauty services and pamper themselves as well as marketing for Healthy Glow and other beauty businesses in the area. This was something I wanted to continue annually to help market local beauty businesses while pampering the mamas of Fort Worth. Two things I am very passionate about. Since I started Healthy Glow, I can relate to businesses that have started on their own. It can be really hard so I enjoy sharing about businesses in the Fort Worth area whether it be for a service or product.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think with anything there can be bumps along the way but we grow from the struggle. My background is not business but I am learning and have enjoyed learning the marketing, branding, accounting and strategy side of things. With three little girls, I am constantly multitasking to get as much as I can get done each day but that is why I am passionate about this event because as moms it is hard for us to stop and make time for ourselves. My desire is that with creating an event it is time we can mark on the calendar and be intentional on making time for ourselves otherwise we tend to put everything else before it. My husband, Joshua, has been a huge supporter in me pursuing my dreams as well as making sure I carve out that intentional time to rest and refuel.
Please tell us about The Mama Experience.
The Mama Experience is an annual event that markets local beauty businesses while pampering the mamas of Fort Worth. The businesses involved are called our Business Beauties. This is not a pop-up shop or a sip and see type of event. You actually get to experience what each business has to offer. All of the services that are listed will be included in the ticket cost. Last year we had a chair massages, hair styling, makeup/eye touch ups, portrait photo, spray tans (two day before) and many more. We had door prizes of gift certificates from our Business Beauties as well as other businesses in the area that moms would love to get. We had a swag bag (ME bags) that included coupons and goodies for each mama that attended. I am currently working on some special goodies that will make our next Mama Experience an event you won’t want to miss out on! What I love about The Mama Experience is that it allows mamas to take a few hours for themselves. They get to be pampered and we are able to share about these amazing businesses in the Fort Worth area. It really is a win-win for everyone!
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
That is what makes this event great! It is an annual event so each time I am learning what we can do better. Last year was our first year so I learned that is does take time to market and spread the word about an event. I wish we would have had our Instagram and Facebook page before the event happened but this year we will be sharing along the way about each of the businesses involved so make sure to follow us on Facebook or Instagram.
