Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Moran.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Ashley. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In the second grade, I entered a coloring contest for the Wizard of Oz and won. My prize was tickets to see the show live downtown, bringing with me my mother and grandmother. This was my first a-ha moment where I realized something I enjoyed doing was profitable, and I felt accomplished.
As I made my way through school I took every art class I could get my hands on and by the time I hit high school I was spending hours after school making magazine layouts just for fun. Today I have a bachelor’s degree in graphic design and have shifted my focus on branding and hand lettered signage. As of 2019, my retro poster designs have taken off more online and at local Dallas pop-ups.
Has it been a smooth road?
Anything in life worth doing never seems to come easy or without painful growing experiences. There were times in college that I slept on floors, couches, in my car and even the basement of a Panera on a few incidents. But I finally got it. However, the hardest parts for me were not landing jobs I really had my heart set on and getting my hopes up, or falling into negative self-talk. I have learned to never let your worst enemy be between your two ears and keep grinding.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Chumpontherun story. Tell us more about your work.
COTR is a design and hand-painted sign studio specializing in branding like logos, business cards and websites to chalkboards, window lettering, wall murals and more. I work out of Fort Worth, usually at my home studio or at Craftwork Coffee Co. where I work as an Experience Leader. I strive to meet the needs of each client’s hands-on to create clean and traditional solutions. I am recently most proud of the work I have done creating a magazine for The Pre-Vinylite Society. Besides the cover, I created all 64 pages front and back.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
There is a major age gap in the hand-painted sign industry right now as it seems sign painters are either 30 years old or 80 years old which kind of tickles me. With hand lettering making a come back I hope it breathes life back into the industry and creates even more need for such a beautiful craft. I’d like to think there’s enough work for everybody now, but hope more opportunities arise.
