Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandy Martin.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Brandy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have been self-employed going on five years now. Prior to me starting my own company last year my sister and I were partners for eight years. We opened a tax office together back in 2012. She ran it solely because I was pregnant with my second child at the time and working a full-time job for insurance. I used taxes as a side hustle.
After breaking my leg in 2015 and the company I had worked so hard for hassling me to come back to work, I decided to just quit, no savings, no current side hustle, just my last pay stub and a bonus check coming. I knew tax season was the next month so I told myself all I had to do is work my butt off so I could double my clientele and support my two kids. Everyone thought I was crazy, I had just walked out on a high paying job with good insurance, with no savings, but I knew If I had no distractions I could do anything I set my mind too. So that next few months I worked my butt off and quadruped my clientele, every year since then I have doubled my numbers.
I am a single homeschooling mom so I had no choice but to succeed. My sister and I choosing to go separate ways last year was the hardest decision I had ever made. We had built the company together and I had to start from ground 0 with three months to tax season. I had to train a class of 13 agents, home school my children, find an office, create a logo, build a website and everything else that goes with running a business in less than three months. Somehow, someway I managed to do everything successfully and end up running a successful tax office expanding my clientele more than ever.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it was not a smooth rode. I think I kind of covered that in the paragraph prior. Me trying to pull a company together in three months and rebuild and rebrand myself all while homeschooling my children and completely by myself.
Please tell us about Bm Tax Professionals LLC.
I own a tax office as well as help homeschooling mothers structure their homes. I am known for the mom who does it all. Lol, no but seriously I am known for the homeschooling mom who runs a tax office. I am most proud of me doing everything by myself, with no loans, no handouts, no help. When I look at my brand, my clothes, my company I see myself and all the hard work I put into it.
What sets me apart from other tax companies is that I cater to my clients in every aspect, and treat them like family instead of just a number. I have a full open bar for them, child snacks, snacks for them, children’s area, any coffee beverage you can think of. I dance with them, send them thank you’s randomly. I allow them to vent to me and we cry and laugh together. I connect with people on personal levels. I don’t look down on anyone or judge.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Hmmmmm…..I would have branched off earlier from my sister and hired a full-time nanny instead of bringing my kids to the office all day.
