Meet Calieel Muhammad

Today we’d like to introduce you to Calieel Muhammad.

Hi Calieel , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My father is a DJ, so he put turntables in front of me at a very early age. I always loved music, but it took my years at Indiana University to truly develop a passion for the art of DJ’ing. I developed a following in college and took my talents back to my hometown to become a household name in my city. This all leads up to me chasing my dream 900 miles away; curating unique vibes blending songs that we all love and sometimes even forget about. My father blessed me with a gift and I would love to showcase it to the world, I feel the beauty of being a DJ is being in control of people’s emotions. Literally, that right song could take a person back to a unique moment in their life, which makes them enjoy themselves all over again.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing is easy, my favorite quote is ease is a greater threat than hardship. My brothers and I formed an event curation team called 28Way. Unfortunately, in 2018, we lost our brother to gun violence at one of our parties, and honestly my life hasn’t been the same since. It comes with good and bad days, but the good pushes me to go even harder knowing this was not only my dream but all of ours. Sometimes even pain can be motivation to get to where you need to be. Not to mention, relocating to a bigger city without knowing individuals in your industry. It all comes with the process, but I do believe being uncomfortable stimulates growth. I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a DJ, but no button pushing, I really get busy. Blends, scratches, wordplay, I really love the art so I took it upon myself to unlearn my craft. I consider myself an open format DJ (events, weddings, clubs, festivals, mixtapes). I love a good challenge, so if you ever need a DJ book me. (#HoldThatBlend)
