Today we’d like to introduce you to Callie Tang.
Callie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
At the beginning of the pandemic, I decided to work from home in Houston to spend time with family. My sister showed me a luxury picnic she wanted for her bachelorette party, so we could have a socially distanced gathering. I thought, “Dallas would LOVE this idea!”. I’ve never been someone who wanted to own a business or do anything like this, so when this idea wouldn’t leave my mind, I knew it was God-given. Immediately, Jesus reminded me that I love to celebrate BIG. Celebrating moments, fellowship, eating good food and enjoying the present with loved ones – this is how I love to live life. And I want to provide a space where others can do the same.
Keeping in mind this was going to be a luxury service; my first thought was my market. Then this made me think of kids in foster care who haven’t been raised in homes that celebrate their lives and those who have endured unfathomable hardships. I want everyone to know that they were uniquely made and that everyone deserves to be celebrated – no matter their skin color, economic background, or circumstance. My dream is to host a picnic for a foster home each month, but for now, we will be giving 10% of the proceeds from picnics purchased to organizations that support foster homes, victims of domestic violence, and fight sex trafficking.
All of that to say – this started as a daydream in May 2020, The Pop-Up Picnic was officially born in June, and in July, we officially launched. I am so excited to see how we continue to grow and collaborate with other local businesses.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Personally, I wasn’t sure what this was going to look like, but I knew God was going to guide my business that alone gave me peace. The most difficult part for me has been pricing. One major learning curve was how to charge for my services. I’ve had to learn how to embrace my business’ value and how to market that/us well. It shows the importance in educating the customer on provided services. Other than that, it has blown my mind how much support and interest The Pop-Up Picnic has received. It’s been poppin’ to say the least!
The Pop-Up Picnic – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
A Pop-Up Picnic is a luxury event and party planning service! We set-up luxury picnics and create picture-perfect memories for any and every occasion. From birthdays to corporate events, baby showers to proposals, or just because you want a picnic – we love to bring our customers’ vision to life!
One thing that makes me most proud of The Pop-Up Picnic is our intentionality. We celebrate purposefully. From the booking process to designing a set-up unique to each customer, 10% of all proceeds are given to organizations supporting foster homes, victims of domestic violence, and those fighting sex trafficking. It is important to me that we give back. If you want more information, the GiveBack section on our website lists the organizations we support. These are only a few of the incredible organizations out there, but we believe it’s a helpful resource for those interested.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Taking a leap of faith! This is completely out of my comfort zone. I would have never seen myself doing this, but it has been such a growing opportunity to embrace the unknown. It’s empowering and liberating to go on adventures. It has been in those moments where I have experienced more of God’s joy and glory. I hope whoever reads this will be encouraged to take their leap of faith. Never lessen yourself or quiet your passions.
