Meet Camille Austin of Camille’s Cakes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Camille Austin.

Camille, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started out making cakes for my children as they were growing up. In 2010 I had some major health issues that left me homebound for over a year. During this time, my daughter encouraged me to make cakes for other people to give me something to do while being stuck at home. My first customer was actually my best friend in high school and her mom was the one who generously gave me her unused tools to get started with my own kid’s creations.

My daughter set up my Facebook business page and is still the one who takes and edits the pictures for it. My son is my graphic designer when I need something special done. They are a huge help and blessing to me. I don’t advertise heavily at this point, it’s word of mouth mostly, but that has kept me very busy and continues to grow steadily.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, being self-taught has brought me many challenges and long nights. There have been many opportunities to learn from my mistakes and I have grown in many techniques. Working from home has its own set of struggles as a mom and a wife. It’s easy to be distracted by what the house needs and what the job requires. It’s a balance that I have yet to master. Texas weather also plays a huge role in the difficulties I may face on any given order. It keeps it exciting.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Camille’s Cakes – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Camille’s Cakes is a home-based bakery. I make custom cakes, cookies, cupcakes and other specialty items. I am mostly known for my cakes, however. I take pride in paying great attention to detail and taking my time on each order so that the customer gets a unique creation carried out with them in mind.

What sets me apart, I’ve been told, is that my cakes look good and taste good, not just one or the other. I also am able to provide special dietary and allergy needs being a small home-based business.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
This is a hard one. Right now, I still have to take my health into consideration. Even though I have come leaps and bounds from 2010, there are still struggles that I face. I would love to have an assistant at some point.

I’m just not sure yet how far I will be able to take this because of my health. In the meantime, I’m very thankful for the growth and opportunities that I have gotten to bless people with my creations.

Your talent is only out-done by the Creators – I think that He “channels” some off His creativity through you. Make me smile!
